i have some questions.

is your position that the old testament "doesn't count" as part of the christian bible?

i dont own a bible, but my impression of how it works is that both the old testament and new testament are in there, is that correct?

presumably your position is that you aware of the tremendous amount of violence in the old testament and it counters your argument so you ignore it? is this is an honest way to discuss christianity?

I would have to agree with you on this one.

 

Do you honestly beleive the tale would be any different with no religion? As flabengal has correctly pointed out completely secular states have an extremely poor record on genocide.

The point is most people are jerks. Powerful people are super jerks who will use any means necessary to manipulate the masses into doing there will. Religion is but one tool used. If it isn't religion it is race or treasure or land or any number of other things. Often it is a combination of many. To blame any of the conflicts you listed solely on religion is foolish at best.

 

Jews are not a race because they do not share one common ancestry or biological distinction. They are not a nationality because Jews have been scattered throughout the world for almost two thousand years. Without Yahweh, Jews don't exist. Their very classification is contingent upon the creation of religion.

Why were they killed? For what reason? Just because the government is atheist, doesn't automatically classify the motivation for death within the borders of that country as non-religious.

Thousands of religious leaders alone were killed by Stalin because they were part of religious groups. Jews were also massacred in the Soviet Union/Russia. Pretty much anywhere that Communism has marched, it has been marked by the deaths of religious leaders and followers. Even today people are still dying because of religious persecution in all of the Asian countries. The tally just keeps increasing ...

 

Jews would disagree with you. The common ancestry is, of course the twelve tribes of Israel (Descendants of Jacob).

there are lots of reasons people fight and kill. religion is one. we would be better off with less reasons available.

 

Many people who are not religious identify themselves as Jews. Jewishness is definitly an ethnicity as much as a religion.

So now religious folks who are killed by the irreligious are at fault for being murdered? You are just being silly. If a vehement anti-Christian atheist goes on a killing spree that happens because Christians exist and not because the guy is crazy? Methinks you are trying to have it both ways.

 

I don't think killing in the name of XXX would change if XXX was wiped from existance. The killing would just happen in the name of YYY. The reason wars and genocides happen is greed and fear not any of the escaped goats used to justify the fear and the greed.

 

i dont agree. one less reason is one less reason. greed, poverty, frustration, oppression, ambition, racism, religion, all these are reasons for war. strike reasons from that list and wars are less frequent.

and for the record i prefer skate goats because i imagine them skating around. escaped goats are ok too.
