Excellent points and I hope you're right and that I've made much ado about nothing.

I just don't like the distractions, real or imagined. In this day of 24 hour media availability and overhyped coverage I don't think the story will disappear until UM hires a coach.

Maybe you're not exactly understanding what I mean. If you've ever coached or lead something, or been responsible to someone for a particular result, you might understand better.

What I am saying is this: He has it all at LSU: great pay, a winning team/ program, a good recruiting area, great athletic dept, terrific fans, a huge stadium, money for good asst coaches/coordinators, and his team competes in the best football conference.

I would say that 90% of the coaches out there, or better, would love to be in his shoes right now at LSU. I am NOT saying he is, or isn't interested or even talking to Michigan.

What I am saying- If he leaves LSU for Michigan after winning (or competing for) a NC, he needs to have his head checked!!! Right now, Michigan vs LSU is NOT even a comparison.

I like him as much as anyone else, but I am sick of this story.

I am focused on the crystal!!!

Another great post with excellent points. :thumb:

Maybe it's this crappy, snowy CO weather that has me on edge.

That or I need to ask Brett for a temporary name change to Paranoid COTiger.

I completely agree. I also believe UM would like CLM to know the rumor didn't come from the AD, the SID, or their legal counsel. It clearly came from someone that ESPN would consider a legit source....legit enough to take it to air. The same person who didn't want CLM at UM in the first place, wanted to make any potential transition a difficult one, and who would love to see CLM appear distracted for the SECCCG. Oh, and somebody who didn't mind making aOSU alum Herbie, look like a tool.

You think Lloyd Carr isn't going out with a punch?

Let's say you were coaching at a great school with amazing tradition, a great salary, nice location, friendly alums, etc and THEN......LSU called and said, "we want YOU". This is the conumdrum that CLM is facing with UM. I might have the most incredible job in college football according to some but if USC, my alma mater and constant theme in my life came calling, I wouldn't think twice. It's home.

I still don't believe CLM is going anywhere but wow, what a tough decision he's had to ponder.

Did the same "source" leak this??? Maybe Carr is the mole...It appears someone really has it in for Miles and his PR people...or someone simply does not like Miles and is attempting to make things/life difficult for him.

Let me understand what you're saying. Let's assume you played and coached (asst) at LSU, then was a HC somewhere ... anywhere. When LSU comes calling, you would pass on the job because LSU isn't doing as well as your current employer? No desire to rebuild your school's football program?

Whether it's him or Howard, someone seems to be doing their best to embarrass his school. Carr has the motivation since they pushed him out the door. These leaks have done nothing but hurt them, along with all the coaches turning them down.

You can't be too happy these days if you're a Michigan alum.

The only thing about that is how and why did it make it to the paper then? It seems odd that an ordinary phone call would be discussed, or anyone would know about it.

I don't blame Les. While it is awful that this has taken this long, if he is a still thinking about it I am fine with that because this is a way tougher decision than I would ever want to make. He also has a family to talk to about it and consider their lives as well. Sometimes it takes more than a week or so do figure that out.

Miles might have liked to coach Michigan and rebuild their program, but he would have lost a lot of credibility in the process and created unreasonable expectations that would have hindered his performance. It's harder to sell loyalty and committment when you make a lateral move for personal reasons and abandon your team. Making such a personal decision creates a reputation of selfishness and egotism.

Also, if you leave, there will always be more talk about the contract you got than if you stay, even with the same money either way. Leaving a team that was top in country creates an immediate demand to bring your new team to the top, and the ego displayed in the process increases expectations even further, leaving the national media and fans eager to criticize if results are unimpressive.

A coach who sticks with their team once they make it to a top level team is an easy and direct figure to understand, a figure who can maintain some mystique and be a fan favorite even during a down year. A coach who jumps ship for personal reasons and/or a bigger payday loses all that and has to win championships to get it back.

There can be exceptions if a coach is forced out, has good reasons, has so great past success to justify the ego, or takes a retirement break between jobs. But in general, if Miles had left to Michigan, he would have been held to a different standard and viewed differently. He would have been viewed as 'the prize' not 'the team guy.' It would have made it harder for him to recruit, motivate, lead, deal with the media, etc and raised expectations. He would have become another Saban or Spurrier, an older Bonds, Giambi, or Arod instead of a younger one, the big free agent not the star on the rise.

Staying at LSU while allowing some speculation during the season was fine. Miles got a bigger paycheck for his family, raised his national profile, and came off in the end as the team guy who is going to stay at LSU long term.

If he talked to Michigan in the role of giving advice, that is fine. They need all the help they can get.
