Take this for what it's worth because I know the perception of posts like this, but: From what I've heard from people in the know is that RP really hasn't lived up to the hype; at least in practice, and Flynn has much better command of the offense and is a better athlete. That last statement was somewhat surprising, but that's what I heard. That being said, it's not like RP doesn't have the potential to step up and grab the job in spring ball. We shall see.
I was at the Fresno State game and I am not shocked by this statement. He wasn't impressive in either arm strength or running ability (I woulda guessed 4.6 speed watching him run). He didn't give the appearance of being the stud that everyone was claiming he was coming out of high school. We shall see.
I was really lookin forward to seeing Perrilloux play at LSU. I was able to watch him in high school a few times and he was amazing. I too was a bit disappointed when I watched him against Fresno St. Granted it was in very limited time. I dont see where his arm didnt look impressive though. In high school I seen him throw 60 yards while rolling out and hit his well covered receiver in stride. His running speed is what didnt appear to be as fast as I though. Nor was his overall ability to elude or fake would be tacklers. He was stiffer when running than I would have expected. He certainly didnt look any quicker than Flynn. I think this just shows how big a difference it is between high school and college. I still have faith he will be an excellent Tiger in years to come, I just think a little bit of reality kicked in, that he isnt quite superman like most were thinking.
He also put on a nice show at the Army AA game. He looked confident above all else. I think he threw for 2 TDs and caught a TD on a trick play. I saw one of his HS games in person and he threw a 45 yd TD while being tackled by a LB on a rollout. His feet were not touching the ground while the LB smacked him in the gut. Cant wait to see how he does against the SEC. :geauxtige
It'll be difficult for RP to live up to the hype because there's so much of it. I still complain about Josh Booty yet he was 1st Team All-SEC and led that year's team to a big turnaround. I went to the Fresno St. game also and remember it pouring down rain for two solid hours before kickoff. I know the field drains well but I'm sure the coaches told RP not to do anything crazy. I'm looking forward to the battle and may the best man win. I liked the statement by Miles but RP's talent and maturity will dictate if he's the starter or even deserves Tebow-like playing time. I think Flynn has all the skills to be a top tier college QB (maybe NFL?) and he really seems to know when to run. The fact that both QBs like to run makes it a great asset to have two options. When you factor in the other playmakers coming back, it must be fun for a new offensive coordinator to get creative (especially with Holliday). This is my first post about next year so I'll have to include a :crystal:
I don't know if you were at the game, but seriously he looked nowhere close to the posted 4.4/4.5 speed coming out of high school Maybe it was due to the rain and not being able to go all out We'll get to see a lot more of him this season in plenty of mop up roles if he indeed isn't the starter. We should know what we have in RP after this season.
I dont think we can judge his speed on that game. I was there and it was awful, I felt bad for the guys playing. Im sure thats the reason cause if he goes any faster he's going to slip. But Im sure next year will show us what RP is made of.
It's been Flynn's job since Russell left. Flynn was the backup this season, Perrilloux the 3rd stringer. Makes sense to at least start out with the same depth chart. now, this doesn't mean I don't believe that Ryan P will get an extended look in the spring; it will be very easy to get Ryan on the field and see what he is made of. I don't really think it matters, they'll both get to play a half during all of the home game massacres anyway. what a great problem to have, lose a top ten pick, then have to replace him by choosing between two so called "backups" that could start at 118 other schools.
