It turned out ok because people questioned the deal. They won't be running american ports, no thanks to the Bush admin.
If you read my posts, you will see that I was in favor of oversight on this. I never said it should not be questioned, only that I was comfortable with it given Bush's position on national security.
And after the flags were raised, the foreign company will give up management of the ports, which was not Bush's position. The questions by Congress and the American public led to an outcome that was the opposite of what Bush intended. Judging by what you and martin posted most recently, you would think Bush's position won out.
Exactly. This whole deal is just the latest embarassment for the Bush administration. Their whole obsession with secrecy is now hurting executive credibilty on Capitol Hill. Recently the domestic spying scandal to circumvent the laws enacted by Congress. And now doing this Dubai deal done without Congressional input and having it blow up in his face has the Republican Congress signalling its independence. They are not going to ride the hellbound train with Dubya. Not in an election year. Bush, who has never vetoed a single bill, actually threatened to veto this one and Congress promptly backed him down with a promise to overide it. Bush lost this fight. He's lost the confidence of The People, he's lost major conservative columnists like George Will and William Buckley, and now he's lost the Congress. Three more years of this lame-duck Presidency and he'll likely lose martin and SabanFan, too. They may be stubborn, but they are not fools.
i didnt say anything about what happened, i only commented that it appears to me that all the furor was over nothing, and that even if the dubai company had not backed down it would have been no big deal. i think people reacted when they really had no idea what the specifics of the whole thing were. people react as if they had some idea of what happens at ports and who this compnay is and what exactly they manage, when really we had never heard of any of it before and were just reacting. i think people tend to draw a conclusion about a topic they know nothing about, and they did in this case. of course, being superior to all of you, i didnt. but like sabanfan, i know that bush has our best interests in mind, and is willing to do the right thing even when he knows it won't help him politically. now many of you still may oppose bush's stance. but i have noticed many liberals have come around after really looking into the ins and outs of the whole thing.
i dunno, i cant speak for sabanfan, but i can be pretty foolish. i think it is extremely unlikely i stop supporting bush. especially if i judge bush relative to his political opponents. even if bush really goes downhill, he will always be many times better than his political opposition. everyone knows that democrats practice cheap demagoguery, and almost nothing else. now if bush's prime rival was a small government atheist whose first order of business was to reduce the size of the government by 50%, that would be different. but as it stands, the alternative to bush is mostly idiots and scoundrels, typical politicians.
And because no one was informed, other than Bush's inner circle (apparently not even Bush himself), the reaction of Congress and the American people was so overwhelming. Exactly. No one had any idea. Many people seek more information on topics they know nothing about. When someone cannot or refuses to provide this information, it sometimes leads to a problem. Have come around to what? From what I've seen, practically everyone (conservatives, liberals, moderates) are relieved at the potential outcome. Now its a wait and see as to who the "US entity" is.
