I definitely think freshmen can contribute, even at QB like Herb did as a true freshman. Herb was also lucky Melvin Hill struggled against Kentucky. I have no idea what to expect from Ricard. He was highly touted but seems to be the forgotten QB. I don't think Mauck or Randall have great arms but you don't need one in college. I wouldn't be upset if either was chosen as the starter next year (including Randall). I respect Jimbo and Nick to make the right decision. I just hope more than one get experience early including Flynn OR Russell. Mauck proved he has invaluable intangibles necessary for the QB position and was starting to improve (he seems like the perfect backup). I keep asking myself if Randall's good moments were mostly Jimbo. Of course, Randall played decent against South Carolina and very good against Ole Miss, Arkansas, & the first half against Texas. He showed remarkable improvement and appeared to be an SEC caliber QB (most might disagree). I wonder how significant his leg injury in the Cotton Bowl was. For all you Randall bashers, watch his last three games with an open mind and honestly tell me he CAN'T be an SEC QB. If you put quality players around him, I think he can produce. It's just hard to forget the Bama and Auburn games.
i played against richard his junior year and he is tall, fast, and hasa cannon. He is pretty accurate too the only thing that worries me about him is his decision making. Anyways I heard something about how he was practicing st WR before the cotton bowl. If Randall doesn't win the job I wouldn't mind seeing him at either WR or DB. He is a great athlete and has the perfect body for it as does Richard. Whoever was talking about Russel moving why the hell would he do that? He is a raw talent with tremendous upside. Even if it does take him to his junior or senior year to become the starter he could become one of the best qbs in the nation.
Randall will be a JR this upcoming season tiger777 - According to www.lsusports.net, Randall and Mauck both were Sophmores this season. Hopefully we can figure out which of these 2 will be our starter for the next two years during the spring and be done with it.
LSU99 you are correct that it is not absolutely crucial to have a great QB but here is the situation for 2003 - DD and the Toe are gone and Robert Addai is the only proven RB returning. Shyrone Carey can be a gamebreaker at times but at his size he is not going to get 20 touchs a game At this point it is unknown whether Vincient of one of the RB signees will pan out. With Clayton and Devery Henderson the Tigers have potentially the best 1-2 receiving combo in the NCAA. It would be a real shame if we don't come up with a QB who can take advantage of their talents
new to the board I read this message board every day however this is my first time posting. In regards to our quarterback situation every one seems to have forgot the highly recruited and talanted Lester Ricard.
sugarland I don't think anybody forgot about Richard but there have been rumors that he was practicing at wideout so nobody is even sure if he will be playing qb. He is very talented but came in very very raw and prolly still needs work. I would love for him to win the job and have a great year due to the fact that he would have 4 years left. If he has moved to wr I think he will be a major contributor next year. He can play there right now pretty much for sure. Anyways I'm ranting. We will all find out soon enough.
Hub if you watch the Florida game you can see that Mauck was finally coming into his own. While with Randall in the SC game all he did was roll out never proving he could read a D and a lot of people saw that. Not too mention I have heard how much of a better leader Mauck is. I can see Mauck playing a Graig Krenzel role for LSU. He may not be the mist exciting QB in the world, he won't throw a game away for you either.
I watched it and we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm not saying he played bad in that game I'm just saying that b/c of how he played in that game does not mean that he was going to play like that the rest of the season.
I Agree with Hub..Like he said earleir in a post, If randall would have gotten injured in the 4th quarter of the S.Carolina game we all would have been like "Geez this kid was the real deal, he would've won us championships" we all know what happened after that game. fact is you can not base anything on one game no matter where in the season that game falls. Maybe Mauck was becoming the player we all hoped he would, maybe he wasn't. I like Mauck I hope he can come in and pick up right where he left off, but realistically, I don't see it happening.
Trust me I'm not putting all my hopes in Mauck I just think he's a much better QB than Randall. Maybe I am wrong, but I thought he was finally getting the hang of things.
