He had a press conference at 3. Here's the ESPN article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1707591
Say it aint so!.... Although I'm dissapointed that Mauck is leaving I'm really looking forward to seeing Russell and Flynn play. I hope they live up to their hype. Good luck to Mauck in the NFL...Maybe him and Clayton will end up on the same team. GEAUX TIGERS!
Matt Mauck will never be remembered as the most talented quarterback to ever play at LSU, but the argument could be made that he is the most important quarterback to his team in our program's history. We absolutely COULD NOT have won the national championship without Mauck, any more than Ohio State could have won it without Craig Krenzel or Miami without Ken Dorsey. I really wish Clayton and Mauck would come back next season and increase our chances of a repeat. But I can hardly blame them for this decision. They have accomplished many great things in their time with this program, things many college football players never get to experience. They were both part of two SEC Championships (boy, who could ever forget Mauck coming off the bench as a redshirt FR. to win 2001 title for us!) and a national title. There really isn't much left for them to do, and I don't blame them for wanting to move on to bigger and better things. I wish good luck to the both of them in their NFL careers and their lives after football. And I also hope both of them finish out their education as well and become whatever they want. Thanks guys!
Forget Mauck, he can be replaced. I'm just so relieved that Webster is staying, because of a somewhat lack of depth at cornerback, its huge that Corey is staying. Corey and Travis will form the best cornerback duo in the country, and throw in Landry and Jessie Daniels to that defensive backfield and it will be tough to pass against us. As for Mauck's replacement, my money is on JaMarcus, but Flynn could easily beat him out. But like I said, I'm not too concerned about the QB position, they can just pound the ball with JV, Broussard, Addai, Barrington until our inexperienced QB feels comfortable.
Thank you Matt! Thanks for 3 years of great memories and a National Championship to boot! Good luck and may God bless you and your family!
It will still be scary going into Georgia, Florida, and Auburn with a freshman QB. I believe in our players and our coaches though. Its corny, but they can do whatever they work towards and put their minds to.
Come on, gang! It was a no-brainer... 1. Why not go out on top? - Seriously, what's the odds that LSU (or any school) will repeat as NC from year to year? 2. He's older; may have a slight chance at the pros, etc., etc. - Why risk getting injured? 3. Unlike Saban, he can't write his own ticket in that there's no extra incentive for him to stay. - To the contrary, his "stock" for the NFL will only go down if he has a bad year or gets injured. Why not try his hand now while he has some good stats?!
He came in a hero... SEC Champinship three years ago...!!! And goes out a hero... this year's NC. In between, was there ever a tiger quaterback in modern history with a better won/lost record...??? What more can you ask...??? Thanks MM --- I'm so glad you were a Tiger and wish you the best.
Here are Mauck's comments from the press conference: "Four years ago, I came for LSU for two reasons," Mauck said. "One was to get an education at a quality university and the second was to be able to play SEC football. It was a dream of mine to play college football and be part of a team and the atmosphere. "In the three and a half years that I have been here, I have been extremely fortunate, to be able to graduate and to be part of a program that I am extremely proud of. It has far exceeded my expectations. To win two SEC Championships and one national championship, is just a dream come true. After speaking with Coach (Nick) Saban, my fiancée, my family and consulting with the NFL, I have decided to the best interest for me to forego my senior year and try to enter the NFL Draft." "It has been an extremely, extremely difficult decision, just because of the wonderful place that LSU is and the amount of people and friends that I have been able to have here," Mauck said. "I can't thank Coach Saban and Coach (Jimbo) Fisher enough for not only helping me to become a better player but a better person. "I would like to thank all my teammates that I have been able to play with and especially the fans. Growing up in Indiana, I had no idea what football was like down here. It has been a tremendous experience and been fun to be a part of. I think Coach Saban has done a terrific job in not only getting great football players but also great people. This program is going to be successful for many years to come. There is not one player that is bigger than this program, and this is something I really have been proud to be a part of. I am not exactly sure what is going to happen to my future but I couldn't imagine a better place than LSU to prepare me for whatever might be ahead." http://www.lsusports.net/article.cfm?ref=11872264-ABFA-68CC-9FCD6218080815E8
