Totally agree. MF has been very inconsistent with his throws. He misses wide open WR. I know they have dropped a lot too, but he's to blame for the arrant throws. I don't know if it's due to the injury or not, but he has to play better for LSU to reach their goal.
Had the dropped balls (I mean they are well thrown balls) been caught, and if LSU had won the game, I think people would have looked at Flynn in a very different light. With the loss, people only remember his bad looking throws and not the whole picture, and put the blame on him:dis:. How about those drive killing penalties? The combination of dropped balls and penalties are enough to make you lose the game; yet, the offense still managed to muster up a reasonable score, just a bit short at the end. Fans should lighten up. People really have short memories and forgot the good plays Flynn made; it seems the bad plays always stands taller. We have receiver route running issues that do not help the situation.
alot of blame to go around, but most of it should be on the coaches, alot of questionable play calling in this game. Everytime RP got in the game even the announcers knew he wasn't throwing the ball... Play action one time? My feeling is we beat ourselves, I dont think any team in the country could beat us if we play our A game. Sad part is we haven't played our A game in a few weeks... That's the worst part about the #1 ranking we had. LSU played poorly and got to the #1 ranking. They didn't have to earn it. Sure the Florida game was special, but we only played about half that game. It shouldn't of been that close. Tighten up we can still salvage a great season! Sugar Bowl bound!
What is most disconcerting is the fact that we can run at will. This, in essense, should open up the passing game big time and Flynn should simply pick defenses apart. If he is playing poorly due to his injury, then by all means let RP play the majority of the game. A healthy RP gives us a better opportunity to win the game vs an injured Flynn. I know we all can agree to that. Had Flynn played a half decent game, the Tigers would have scored 50 in regulation. It would help if our receivers would catch the ball more consistently. I just think a QB which is on target more often (see RP's 80 percent completion rate) may give us more consistency in our receivers catching the ball more often.
That's just it though. Give him credit for the Drops, and Flynn completes over 70% vs. Tulane, 65 % vs Florida, and 66% against Kentucky. Those are actually pretty good numbers. Right at a what JR was completing last year.
Some drops are normal, or have we forgotten last year? It's not all about completion percentage -- it's the things you see when the game is being played (like passes NOT thrown or conservative play by necessity.) As to the latter, as a Texans fan, I've seen that for the previous 5 years. Carr was leading the league in rating and passer rating many times. With zero TD passes and pedestrian performance overall.
You also have to wonder if receivers are in the spots they're supposed to be. I see more problems with the receiving core than the QB. That could also be why RP isn't getting much PT. if wide-outs are handling thier assignments properly, I'd rather have a veteran in there than an guy with only limited play under his belt. I think this turns around drastically when Early gets back in the game.
Flynn is our quarterback, warts and all. Perrilloux still hasn't learned to watch the friggin' play clock. How many more rookie mistakes will we see if he were to take over? Flynn is not a great QB, but neither was Matt Mauck. But both were steady and reliable SEC-caliber QB's. Flynn tends to lock on to his primary receiver, he tends to wait too long to throw to an open receiver, and too often throws short. He has too few TD passes. But I can't help but feel that Perrilloux isn't competely ready yet, which is one reason Les is putting him in the game, so we don't start another green QB next season. Remember that Russell, with all his talent, didn't really blossom until his junior year. RP may be another slow developer. We need to start Flynn this year for a number of reasons, but at this point in the season, it may be time to let Perrilloux get in for an entire drive, not just second down plays.
What Red said. All of the "we would have won if RP was our quarterback" posts crack me the hell up because had RP started against KY and made the rookie mistakes that you know he'd make and we lost, everyone would be bitching and moaning about Miles letting him take the majority of the snaps. I agree that Flynn hasn't played up to his potential since his injury, and that RP should see more playing time (including entire drives), but let's not forget that Flynn still brings a lot to the table as starter and that Ryan "Watch the Damn Play Clock" Perilloux isn't quite ready to take charge.
