    Re: Tournament Seeding.

"To refresh, your trusty scribe was invited to Indianapolis, along with other media members, to sit through in one day what the NCAA Tournament selection committee does in five.

We worked in pairs, and my partner was a young man named Kyle Whelliston of Basketballstate.com, and the former ESPN employee was very informed of the college basketball scene.

Throughout the entire process, the NCAA folks - Greg Shaheen, Jeanne Boyd and Dave Worlock - provided us with tons of information.

You could put two teams side by side for comparison, or you could get a school's RPI, SOS (strength of schedule) or its record against teams from the RPI top 50, the top 100, etc.

Also, all day, since we were simulating the selection process, Worlock would announce (make up) scores from various conferences, and those teams were added to the field.

Finally, we got the field of 65 set, we had a few seedlings finished, and we took a break.

When we came back, one guy, across the room, asked if there was a procedure to remove a team in favor of another team.

Shaheen said that, actually, there is, and cited how.

The guy, who is well-respected as a writer and for his TV work, proposed that LSU be removed and Siena be added.

That, you can't do. You could have a vote to remove LSU, and that would move Siena up on the bubble. We were still waiting on some conference finals in which each had a team that was already in the NCAA Tournament field playing for its conference championship.

If there were no upsets, spots would open.

Yours truly spoke up for LSU, saying they were the winners of the SEC regular season, and some other guy across the room objected that the Tigers hadn't played Kentucky yet, but he was reminded that for this practice, the regular season was finished.

Still, we voted and it had to be 7-2 to remove, according to the rules. The vote was 5-4 to remove LSU, so the Tigers remained in the field.

When all the tournaments were over, the field was set and about half the seedings were finished, the computer crashed, and so did yours truly.

It was an incredibly intensive day that had bouts of boredom and short spurts of excitement, but it was a totally informative exercise.

Overall, the SEC didn't fare well. It got four teams in the field - Florida a No. 8 seed, Tennessee a 9 seed, LSU a 10 seed and South Carolina a No. 11 - and most thought the league had gotten soft on all those cupcakes. "

wow. a majority of knowledgeable sportswriters wanted LSU out. wanted the SEC champions out.

So the same sports writers that put LSU in their Top 25 now want us out of the tournament? :rolleye33: To put a MAAC team in?? Maybe they just want to turn the tournament selection into the BCS to give them an at-large. Un-freakin-believable.

found two of the four sportswriters, the writer of the article, Kirk Wessler, and Seth Davis, a pretty big national basketball analyst.

    "RECONSIDERATIONS

Teams can be reconsidered, even after they’ve been voted into the at-large field, or off the board. This is in the guidelines, but I never really paid attention to it. Until Thursday night, when we had only about six at-large spots left, and Davis and I decided LSU was taking up undeserved space. So we moved to reconsider, got a second and then launched the first and most heated argument of the day. We got the majority to agree with us that we should not have put LSU into the field, but we fell short of the seven votes necessary to make the Tigers extinct."

This is bad if that is what the media thinks of LSU.

Sadly, it is all media perception.

LSU has yet to have an SEC game nationally televised. We have two next week with Florida and Kentucky on ESPN and CBS, respectively. We also have 6 games only on the radio.

Compare that to Kentucky, who was nationally televised in EIGHT of their SEC games, and never had a game untelevised.

Raycom picked up every single Kentucky or Tennessee game that did not go to ESPN or CBS. Wonder why the MSU game Wednesday didn't get picked up? :po:

This rankings site doesn't take into consideration the scenario you laid out, but it's interesting to see where the March Madness predictor has all the teams falling in the 65-team field this post-season. The ranking they give LSU is lower most of the guesses so far, but if you divide it by the 4 regions, we'd fall somewhere between an 8 and 9 seed.

Lets talk Ncaa Tournament seeding and possible positioning

Joe Lunardi of ESPN seems to be the best at projecting potential seeding for the NCAA tournament. As of now he's got us as a 7 seed in the philly bracket, going to minneapolis which is a rough spot. Not only playing Wisconsin who's solid and well coached in that 7-10 matchup but a second round game vs memphis...

Even if we stay at 7 we're looking at playing a Louisville or wake forrest in a potential second round match up....

6 would be a much better spot playing a duke/xavier/kansas type of team that would be a little easier to get by...

At 5, there's no reason to believe we wouldn't be able to make a run to the sweet 16 at least.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/bracketology

There's the link to his weekly updated bracket.

Lets keep up the success, move up the polls, and get ourselves a good seeding. Winning both the SEC regular season and tournament should get us at least a 5 seed... but wth do I know?:geaux:

Re: Lets talk Ncaa Tournament seeding and possible positioning

I agree, if we win both regular season and tourney, I don't see how we won't get at least a 5 seed.

If we can keep our losses down to 1 from here on out and win the SEC tourney, I have LSU projected around a #13-#15 ranking in the polls and an RPI in the top 20. LSU just moved up to #34 in the RPI, a big jump of 7 spots with the win over Arkansas.

Hard to put us beyond 5 at that point and a decent shot at a 4 seed. A four or 5 seed is basically the same thing, however, so it won't matter much.
