Yeah, and Stoops was coach at Oklahoma, while Miles was coach at Oklahoma St. Oklahoma has an endowment of $1.114 billion. Oklahoma St has an endowment of $468 million. Oklahoma has won seven National Championships. Their all-time record is 757–294–53. They have had 144 All-Americans. They are #2 all-time in weekly AP Top 25 poll appearances, #2 all-time in weekly AP Top 10 appearances, #1 all-time in weekly AP Top 5 appearances, #2 all-time in weekly AP #1 appearances, #2 all-time in finishes in the AP final Top 25, #2 all-time in finishes in the AP final Top 10, #1 all-time in finishes in the AP final Top 5, and #2 all-time in AP National Championships with seven (behind only Notre Dame, who has eight). To see how awesome their football facilities are, see http://soonersports.com/bobstoops/pages/Facilities/index.html Oklahoma St has a losing record of 478–489–39. They have 32 All-Americans in their history. Their football stadium looks like a high school stadium: I think Stoops had a little bit of an advantage being at Oklahoma. Put it this way, before Jimmy Johnson went to Miami, he coached at Oklahoma State for four years. Les Miles did a lot better during his four years at Oklahoma State than Jimmy Johnson did.
Ah, of course. Do you remember what OU was like before Stoops arrived? I do. Im sure our resident Toni Reali could help you out if you do not remember. Comparing records is pointless, John. It is the same reason you cant start your argument with what Les has done at LSU in the last couple of years as your only argument, because I am pretty sure we put a dollar or two into our program. Difference is, the situations were different when they took over. Miles would have been able to enjoy those dollars in the state of Oklahoma too if Mr. Pickens didn't hate him so much. Damnit John, don't make me use any more facts like this and just admit Stoops is a better coach. Miles is a great coach, you should just stop there.
Comparing how Stoops did from 2005-2007 at Oklahoma to how Les did at LSU 2005-2007 at LSU is fair. And Les did a better job.
You could...and you would be absolutely correct. But when you say: ...most people would look at their careers and not just a favorable span for one of the parties to make a decision. I could be wrong.
I agree that anyone who sustains a great program for 10 years like Stoops did at Oklahoma deserves more lifetime achievement props then a coach that has done better than him for a shorter time period. But the point of my thread here is not to debate Stoops vs. Miles, the point of my thread here was to cheer up Tiger fans who think we aren't a great program anymore.
I realize that and I am with you. I will end my bitter debate that belittled Miles somewhat even though that wasn't my intent. I liked your optimism today and I was right there with you. I just have a pet peeve about these types of things...and it is two in the morning. After all those words nice to see we are on the same page.
Great post. We lost 4 games last year after our NC in 06. We had better QB play with a second year soph. than you guys have had with QB's who had yet to take a snap before this season.
I agree. I get the point of John's post. Look, LSU fans are some of the most passionate, and IRRATIONAL fans in college football. But, that's what makes the program great, right? You win a NC one year, and the next year the sky's falling and it's time to get rid of the coach. I think it's a worthwhile statement on the ups and downs of college football (sports for that matter) and I appreciated the look back. LSU hopefully will be markedly improved next year and heck, hopefully some of these good SMART recruits will see an opportunity to compete with this bunch. And, it's logical right, you win the NCs with seniors and experience and after that it's a rebuilding year? Oklahoma, also had the benefit of a softer conference all those years. Now, it's hard to say. But, I still believe a SEC-Big 12 matchup will show the world that these records in the Big 12 can be deceiving. What we've got to see as true football fans, is is this the natural progression of a post NC team, which sees reloading of talent and improving, coaching up of those young players. Or, is there something broken? Afterall, Coach J Brady went to the Final Four, right? :hihi:
Since we are comparing how about a comparison to Larry Coker. I remember Coker winning the NCG in his first year. The program was loaded. They were good for about 4-5 years and then it completely fell apart. From ESPN: Here is Coker's record at Miami 2001 12-0 Rose: Beat Nebraska 37-14* 2002 12-1 Fiesta: Lost to Ohio State 31-24* 2003 11-2 Orange: Beat Florida State 16-14 2004 9-3 Peach: Beat Florida 27-10 2005 9-3 Peach: Lost to LSU 40-3 2006 6-6 TBA - FIRED
Or we could make a comparison to Bear Bryant: 1964 10-1 (National Champions) 1965 9-1-1 (National Champions) 1966 11-0 (SEC Champions) 1967 8-2-1 - Lost Cotton Bowl 1968 8-3 - Lost Gator Bowl 1969 6-5 - Lost Liberty Bowl 1970 6-5-1 - tied Bluebonnet Bowl Should Bama have fired Bryant at this point? They didn't, and Bryant when on to do this: 1971 11-1 (SEC Champions) 1972 10-2 (SEC Champions) 1973 11-1 (National Champions) 1974 11-1 (SEC Champions) 1975 11-1 (SEC Champions) 1976 9-3 1977 11-1 (SEC Champions) 1978 11-1 (National Champions) 1979 12-0 (National Champions) 1980 10-2 1981 9-2-1 (SEC Champions) 1982 8-4
