There is a big difference between cheering FOR the tigers and against someone else. This, in my opinion, is a time for the former.
The general public's memory is very short. May sound hard, but by then, (5 mos) most will be very distanced from it. Look how many thousands of lives were lost with Katrina and it seems so far away from the mainstream society's eye already.
Very interesting. I think that it would be kind of cool to cheer a team when they come on the field, then beat them mercilessly in the game.
This will personally be tough for me in light of the way some of the Va Tech fans treated me in Blacksburg a few years back.
We should cheer for them when they come on the field and after they leave in defeat.:thumb: We of all fans should konw that, was Arizona State so far back that you forgot? We have gotten the sympathy of many other schools and now is defintely a time for us to give some back to VT. Think about it...it was the deadliest campus shooting in history, they were all affected by it. This goes beyond the bounds of sports...
I am not an insensitive person, I have great empathy for the families of those slain. It bothers me, however, that so many seem to desire recognition as victims, like it is a catharsis for their own fears. VT was not the victim, those killed or injured were. Do not cheat others and yourself by being any less than one of the greatest venues of all sports. Charity and compassion should be reserved for those actually harmed, not those who were vaguely associated with the event.
We all have the families of those who were lost in our prayers but truthfully, thats about as much as we can do for them. While the football players weren't directly hurt, i'm sure they were all affected knowing that many of their fellow classmates were killed. Since none of us knew the victims it's not so wrong to give sympathy to those who we encounter from there.During the game, I'm sure most fans won't even be thinkin about what happened but rather on cheering for the play. Their football team is not desiring the recognition as victims, i'm not sure where you got that from. I can see what your saying but I just don't think that their football team is doing taht
I don't think their team will be looking for any kindness or perceives themselves as the victims. I just find it objectionable that the administrators and news media make this out to be a VT tragedy. It is not. Maybe this is over simplifying the situation, but I don't feel any special need to pay morbid honor to a University because many have died. Marshall was different, it was the team that came onto the field to continue on where the others left off that was honored. Katrina was different, LSU was a symbol of resurgence from a devastation that affected many lives. In this case, VT is being used as a symbol for something that impacted a tiny percentage of it's student body. It troubles me that in the end the story will be about VT, rather than those that lost their lives.
How about NO!!!! We are not their first game. Let the first team they play clap and cheer for them. Do you want everyone on their schedule to give them a standing ovation when they come into their stadium? They are coming here to play football not to hold hands, roast marshmallows, and make friends. They want to ruin your day in Tiger Stadium. They want to ruin our chances of a NC in week 2. Be a Tiger and give them hell!
