J. soloman, idiot sportswriter for the Houston Chronicle, makes his case for USC in today's paper. Here's the link: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/sports/2336090 Since he writes about it, this guy should know college football, and he obviously doesn't. Here's his article, so you don't have to click the link: Jan. 5, 2004, 1:21AM The case for Southern Cal By JEROME SOLOMON Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle Jerome Solomon has the Chronicle's vote in the Associated Press football poll. Here's who he picked No. 1 after Sunday night's Sugar Bowl and why: Each week on my AP ballot, I put what I believe to be the most deserving team at No. 1. The last week of the season that team was Southern California, and it remains that way today. No. 1 Southern California. That makes sense. I was fairly certain throughout the season that Oklahoma was the best team in the country, and I voted accordingly each week. Now I believe USC is better. After the Sugar Bowl, I know LSU is better than the Sooners. But is USC better than LSU? Obviously, I think so. Still, LSU is deserving of its share of the national title. Each team faced the pressure of knowing another loss would not only knock it out of the national title picture but also its conference race. How did the Trojans respond? They scored at least 37 points in eight straight games after the loss. People talk Pac-10 and think "good offense," and that applies to USC. But it didn't have a good offense this season; it had a great one. A surprising star in quarterback Matt Leinart and perhaps the most imaginative offensive coordinator in the country in Norm Chow resulted in a Pac-10 record number of points. People try to compare schedules, which for the most part is pointless. I compare players and schemes, but I think USC would have whipped many of the teams LSU beat more decisively. USC is much better than Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and others in the SEC, and there is no way Florida challenges the Trojans at home -- period. USC is No. 1 -- period.
This just goes to show you that having a brain is optional when it comes to the sports media. There's no reason to have any type of knowledge of college football to post your opinion. Everyone knows the SEC is the powerhouse of the nation....the bowl record proves it and this is where the National Championship lies. How much better could it be? USC.....The highly overated University of Spoiled Crybabies
When the TV media go on about USC's great offense (and they do have a great one) being the difference, they fail to take into account the Michigan's D was pathetically slow, so much so, that USC's receivers were wide open and the QB had all day to throw. Against LSU the receivers would be locked down and the QB would be running for his life. The main reason White looked off against LSU was that he had nobody to throw to and not enough time to wait until somebody finally got open. Against USC there would be no difference. Probably, after LSU won the media would say USC had an off game. PS: I'd like to add: WHO CARES ANYWAY, LSU is the National Champion.
They said the same thing about OU and LSU... Defense wins championships.................. Total yardage says it all.... I really think we could blow out USC, something like 34-7
