Yesterday they started cutting down the 88-year-old live oak trees south of Tiger Stadium to make way for the new south end zone upper deck. It's a shame.
It's been so damn long since I was there I doubt that I have a good idea of the current lay of the land. That said, there are enough smart people around there who should have been able to figure a better way it seems like. Glad to see the new addition to the stadium because it is just another sign of how strong our program and brand have become but I wish they could have prevented cutting the trees. Think of how many people have enjoyed it's shade over the past 88 years. Okay, tree hugging speech over.
They moved similarly-sized oak trees in Atlanta when they held the Olympics there, so I know it can be done. I'm surprised that LSU Alum let it happen.
The TAF made a point out of NOT mentioning that the oaks would be felled. They could have been moved but they didn't want to spend the money or the time. They fast-tracked this project and want this deck to be ready in 2014.
If the Golden Girls go out and start hugging those trees, I'm gonna pull out the old tree costume from the attic and dust it off !!!
You know, I got no problem with LSU cutting down those trees as long as they have to pay for environmental mitigation in another location....say the disappearing swamps.
