Yeah, that's about on the money. I think that'd be the perfect scheme for him, is an "anchor" de in a 3-4 scheme. Once he's healthy, he'd be a monster.

Here's another opinion on his workout (this one more glowing):

LSU held its second pro day on Thursday at which time three highly-rated former Tigers, DE Marcus Spears, CB Corey Webster and C Ben Wilkerson worked out for pro scouts for the first time this spring because of injuries. Spears, who is projected to go somewhere between the 15th and 25th picks this coming April said he was pleased with his workout despite the fact that he is still not 100% after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on a knee in January. Spears measured in at 6-4, 304 and reportedly ran in the mid-4.9 range on a very fast track indoor track in Baton Rouge. Because of the fast track teams appear to have factored Spears' time to closer to the 5.05-5.10 range. CB Webster, an early to mid-second round prospect ran even better. Webster clocked in the 4.45 range which was factored to be around 4.50; Webster also posted some very code shuttle drill times, running the short shuttle in 4.03 and the 3-cone drill in 6.93. Meanwhile, C Wilkerson, who hasn't played since rupturing a patellar tendon in October, didn't run but did partake in positional drills. For his part, Wilkerson measured in at 6-4, 303.

just a word about the bench reps: i'm not sure if they're doing 225lbs, but if they are, this little tidbit may help. at the strongman competition for this years pro bowl, la'roi glover won by benching 225lbs 32 times.

spears' biggest strength has always been his intelligence. he NEVER sold out to the inside lane and was ALWAYS exactly where he was supposed to be...harrasing the QB (or whatever other unlucky sap had the ball on that play). that's why he had 2 INTs returned for TD's...b/c he did not miss his assignments....ever.

    Fanball.com on Spears:

    Marcus Spears, LSU
    Height: 6-4
    Weight: 298
Likely Draft Position: Early First Round
    Possible Destinations: Lions, Chargers, Chiefs,
    NFL Comparison: Julius Peppers

If there is any defensive lineman versatile enough to draw comparisons to Panthers' defensive end Julius Peppers, it would be Spears. After all, he was the most sought after high school tight end in the nation and spent time playing on both sides of the ball during his freshman season at LSU. It's hard to say whether Marcus' future pro team will use him on offense. Nevertheless he has the skills and attributes to be a dominant defensive player at the pro level. He is coming off an impressive senior season in which he logged 49 tackles and nine sacks. However, Spears is just coming into his own as a pass rusher, having been limited to just 10 sacks prior to 2004. Unlike most of the other defensive ends in this year's draft class, Marcus would help his game by dropping a few pounds from his ample mid-section.

Still, it should be taken with a grain of salt, they compared Pollack to DWIGHT FREENEY. I'm sorry, but "his motor" don't go that fast.

It is not an incline bench. A couple of guys have hit the 40+ range(one did it last year) in the past. No way these guys are doing 40+ on an incline.

Wasn't comparing him to the pro's, but to other prospects, so the kind of bench press should not really matter if they are all doing the same kind. It just surprises me that he didn't do as many as much smaller guys who are noted for their speed and quickness instead of their strength.

Guys, Marcus Spears will be an NFL football player, and have a good career...But, you guys are forgetting the Arkansas game in 2003...

Everyone knew that their stalwart OT Shawn Andrews would not play in their bowl game, and he openly advertised his NFL draft "showcase" game as being against LSU...

He did just that...On Cedric Cobb's long touchdown run, and the 60+ yard tear he ripped off the play before, the Hogs ran right down LSU's throat, and Cobbs followed the bonecrushing blocks of Shawn Andrews, who absolutely PUNKED OUT Spears during the game...

Sorry fellas, but Andrews was legit NFL starter material...and he worked Spears...I know it's been over a year since then, but delusions of Spears being anything more than a quality defensive lineman in this league are a tad far fetched...

The biggest buzz that Marcus will generate is his draft position...and I'm not trying to be anti-LSU or anti-Marcus Spears...It's just my honest opinion.

that may be so, but i remember moffit saying prior to the '04 season that he had more guys on that squad that could bench over 500lbs than he had ever had on one team, including the tenn NC team from '98. it was in an article about what a phenomenal strength & conditioning coach he is.

    jesus, 500lbs...that's freaking insane.

Lifts can be trained for.. so its a matter of the training.. i know some guys one the powerlifting team at ULL that, overall, arent great athletes, but because they train for the bench, they can lift a ton... so bench doesnt equate to a measure of strength.
