>>...did not do the broad jump because he was still concerned about his knee. Hellooo? Anyone? We all know that Marcus can run faster than that. Ou sure as hell knows as well as anyone who watched him sprint to the endzone in the 2003 Sugar Bowl. The knee is still borhering him. Besides, 40 times matter much more to fans than scouts. They see what happens on the field and they know that Spears is a rare combination of power and quickness for a DE these days. Most NFL DE's now are either/or.
What has surprised me the most out of all the stats that have come out the past 2 years is the weak lifting numbers that LSU's linemen have posted. 23 reps is not all that much and to have a guy like Roth, who is known more for his quickness than his strength, do more surprises me. Pollack too.
remember when they had those nfl competitions and willie roaf often won the 225 lift? I was often shocked 20 something won those as well so although there are others who do a bit more I do not think its as common as you think. or as I once thought should i say.
thats because their strength and conditioning program is not really focused on strength or size. It tilted more toward speed, speed and more speed. They also work on stuff that helps them stay healthy thru the year more so then strength and size.
Hence the awful 5.1 forty time! Seriously, Spears' stock can't be helped with this very pedestrian (OLineman-type) time, unless he really is still hurt. Some team's going to get a heckuva player though.
I think Spears time and strength numbers may hurt him in the draft, we'll see. It hurt Lavalais too and he was stolen by the Falcons IMO. It cost him a lot of money. I also agree that Spears numbers don't suggest that they concentrated on his speed to the detriment of strength.
If I'm not mistaken the pros bench is on an incline. If so it is much harder than a flat bench press. Is the college bench on an incline or flat? If its flat this might explain the college numbers being what they are as compared to the pros.
Here is another guy's take on Spears and that workout: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-offseasonnotes040405&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
