The announcing crew last night referred to us as "D-line U". Not the first time we've heard that accolade. They threw out some stat as far as D-linemen that have been drafted in the NFL over the last several years. It was a crazy number.
Kirkpatrick and Claiborne are about what and what. Bama's nickel back can't touch Mathieu, however. That's the difference.
I know this D is sick, but I think we all need to slow down a little on how great we believe the D is or will be. I remember how dominant the D was out of the gate in 2007; 45-0 over Miss State, 48-7 over VT, then another shutout, then holding Tebow U to 24. Then, out of the blue(no pun intended), Kentucky puts up 43(albeit in 3OT), Alabama put up 34, Auburn and Ole Miss(0-8 Ole Miss, btw) put up 24 each, and finally 50 to AR-Kansas(again, albeit in 3OT). Yes, there were turnovers putting the D on short fields, punt return TDs given up to Ole Miss and Bama, etc,,but the point is, the D didn't play really dominant for about 6or7 weeks there and helped contribute to losing 2 games. This D is very talented, but let's see them against some more SEC caliber athletes on O before we annoint them kings of all college football Defenses.
no 6'3" corners either. and brandon taylor is underrated nationally. if kirkpatrick is 1a with claiborne, then so is taylor with barron.
This D would have to start suffering injuries for this unit to decline. An injury here and there would not have any effect. No one player stands out like Dorsey did in 07. Logan goes down, Freak just plays more and probably even more impactful. Dorsey's injury after the Auburn game (dirty phucking player) in 07 cost us dearly.
Pretty simple explanation IMO...our defense now is just flat out better in just about every level except maybe linebacker. Different coach. Seem to be just as driven as they are talented.
