Saban has two routes to take: 1) He can stay at LSU and build a national power the likes the Nebraska, OU, Miami, Florida State, etc. similiar to what Steve Spurrier did at Florida. He will no doubt go down as one of the great college coaches if he stays at LSU. His recruiting is 2nd to none, and he knows how to coach the kids he recruits. LSU being in the top 5 EVERY year is pretty much a lock as long as he is here. 2) He can bolt to the NFL and take the chance of following the paths of Butch Davis and Steve Spurrier. The extreme lack of loyalty at the NFL level with the players has to be a complete turn off for him. And it's only getting worse. I still don't remember a Tiger dialing up a cell phone after he made a touchdown. These kind of antics of overpaid egotistical fools is once again things that Saban does not care for. If you seen the speech he gave after winning the NC in the Sugar Bowl, you saw genuine heartfelt praise for this university, fans and players alike from Saban. He was emotional. His loyalty to this university is stronger than some of you might think. Saban stays. Lovie Smith will be the next Chicago head coach.
I think everyone knew he would grant the Bears an interview because of his connections there. It doesn't mean he will leave. However if he does turn down the Bears offer I would think he is here for a while. It's not too often you have as many NFL vacancies as there were this year, he won the Championship and he has ties to the Bears front office. If we survive this interview we will be in good shape. If he should decide to lead the Bears next season we are in excellent shape to find a high quality coach to keep us on our current path. I do not think Jimbo is ready to lead us as of yet and that we would need to look outside the organization to fill our need. Give Jimbo a few more years under Saban and then maybe.
Originally posted by Chip82 This should be interesting coming during the heaviest recruiting period of the year in college football. But I have to give Saban credit for wanting to make a quick decision. You have to wonder... What else can Saban achieve at LSU and/or at the college level? a lot more...a whole lot more....right now, he would go down as one of the best coaches in LSU history....5 years from now, he will go down as one of the best coaches in NCAA history Does Saban like college recruiting as opposed to just being the HC in the NFL? yes, he enjoys recruiting...he has several quotes of him saying this including this paraphrase: "would you rather coach a bunch of immature kids, or would you rather want to coach college ball" Does the NFL present more of a personal challenge?yes, this would be the only reason Saban takes the job this year...but the bottom line is the challenge will ALWAYS be there...there is no rush for him Does Saban like the talent level better in college or in the pros? he definitely likes the talent in college better...where he can develop young players into superstars i.e. Chad Lavalais, Corey Webster (former WR), Jack Hunt (former WR), etc.. Does Saban like to develop players?see the above question...u can somewhat develop in NFL but for the most part if you're in the NFL you already know how to play damn good football...he likes the development of college kids more And I am sure there are plenty of personal questions that can be asked as well...yes, there can...but all questions would more than likely point to a return at LSU...will he leave? yes, but not within the next 2 years....i say 2 years b/c after u win 3 straight MNC's you tend to get bored Saban has been in the NFL before so he is not like Spurrier marching off into the unknown. this is true...Saban is also a different coach than Spurrier...Saban would have an easier time winning in the NFL than Spurrier...Saban demands the most of his players and won't take their shit[i/] It sounds like Saban is going to have some soul searching to do.in a few years, yes he will :geaux:
uh, yeah...the question is can LSU offer a contract offer from any NFL team...and that answer is no the NFL can spend 5 to 6 million per year on a coach LSU is lucky to be able to spend 3 million per year
Uh, yeah. I think you got this backwards. Do you really think LSU will be able to match any contract offerfrom the NFL. The answer is no. Especially for a team in a huge market like Chicago.
If Saban leaves LSU for the Bears for $4 or even $5 million a year, he might be well advised to drop his routine about "not caring about the money." He said his "heart was at Michigan State" just a few days before contacting LSU for its Head Coaching job. He said Michigan State was not committed to him even though they gave him two raises in two years. It is pretty hard to convince cab drives and gas pumpers in Chicago that he does not care about the money when it is clear that he leaves jobs for more money each time. He grew up poor or at least to a working class family so everyone understands wanting a lot of money, but it is getting clear that for Saban it IS about the money. He said his Daddy asked him what it was he wanted he didn't have when making $2 an hour, but most people would think that with the $3 million a year for ten years LSU is offering, he should be able to get what most people would want. You can eat only so many steaks even from Ruth's Chris Steak House.
My point exactly when I say what can he buy for $4,000,000.00 that he can't buy for $3,000,000.00. At some point, when you're talking this kind of money, it has to be more than just about money. I truly believe the guy when he says he loves it at LSU and that he enjoys what he's doing. He has stated that he likes developing the players and seeing them become successsful in life as well as on the football field. In the items I've read when a player commits, the player and his parents always mention that one of the things that helped them pick LSU was the fact that Saban cared about them as people, not just players. They point out his honesty and straightforwardness. I don't believe the guy to be driven by money. In his speech the other night he said it wasn't about titles to him, it was about the success the team had achieved as players and where they had arrived in their development as individuals. Believe me, there is nothing this guy can achieve in the NFL that he can't at LSU and he knows it. If he is as smart as we all give him credit for, he knows he is better off at LSU than in the pros. Besides he was in the pros once already. If he wanted to be an NFL coach all that bad, he would have stayed there and probably been one by now. GEAUX TIGERS!!!
