This is the key. He's not in over his head, as much as may still be learning himself, or adjusting to these particular players. So far, just this year, Islstl would fire Grimes, Miles and CJJ. Good thing he's not an AD.
For comparison and perspective, let's look at Coach John Wooden's coaching tenure at UCLA... His first fifteen years at UCLA, while he had winning records each year, he was not spectacular, finishing out of the AP yearly rankings nine of his first fifteen first years and all six years that he finished ranked during that initial period, his highest ranking was 7th. (his other final rankings were just 8th, 13th, 14th, 15th, & 19th). Interesting, immediatly prior to his great run (1963 - 1974 where his teams finished either 1st or 2nd ranked in all but two years), he went six years without being ranked in the final AP rankings. In hindsight, it sure was a good thing for the Bruins that they had patience in Coach Wooden. Yeah I'm willing to give CJJ a little leeway. He is building something. I think this team is underachieving if they don't make the tourney but it's too early to pass final judgment on CJJ after this year, especially with the class he has coming in. But certainly not a great coaching performance so far this year. I still think the cupcake preconference schedule is biting them in the ass now.
It's looking like a 9-9 or 10-8 SEC. Sadly that won't be good enough to get them in. I hope they figure out an offense or figure out how to dictate tempo and push the action. They seem to be caught between wanting to be a run and gun team and a half court team. They have no identity.
