Five Anteaters Selected on Day Two of MLB Draft

IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine baseball team had five players selected on the second day of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Friday.

Junior outfielder Ollie Linton was selected in the 13th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 408th pick.

Junior infielder Ben Orloff was picked in the 19th round by the Colorado Rockies with the 587th selection.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Bryce Stowell was selected in the 22nd round by the Cleveland Indians with the 681st overall pick.

Senior catcher Aaron Lowenstein was picked in the 44th round by the San Francisco Giants with the 1317th overall selection.

Junior outfielder Tony Asaro was selected in the 47th round by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 1404th pick.

The five Anteaters join junior pitcher Scott Gorgen to give UCI six players selected in the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft tying for the second most Anteaters drafted in a single season with the 2007 squad holding the record with eight players drafted. UCI had six players drafted in 1983, 1988 and 2005.

Seven Tigers Selected on Day 2 of MLB Draft

BATON ROUGE -- A day before starting the opening game of the NCAA Super Regional against UC Irvine, LSU left-handed pitcher Ryan Verdugo was selected by the San Francisco Giants as the fifth pick of the ninth round (267th overall pick) on the second day of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Verdugo, a Washington native who transferred to LSU from Skagit Valley College, is 9-2 in 2008 with a 3.81 ERA in 18 appearances. This marked the third time he has been drafted in his career, as he was selected in the 43rd round by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2005 and in the 47th round in 2007 by the Giants.

Shortly after Verdugo was taken, junior slugger Matt Clark was picked by the San Diego Padres as the 23rd selection of the 12th round (375th overall). The 6-foot-5 Fontana, Calif., native leads the Tigers with 25 home runs while batting .340 in 2008. Last year at Riverside (Calif.) Community College, he was taken in the 28th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

San Diego is just more than 100 miles from Clark's hometown (located just west of Los Angeles).

Louis Coleman became the third Tiger taken on day 2, as the junior right-handed pitcher was taken by the Washington Nationals in the 14th round (421st overall). Coleman, a junior from Schlater, Miss., was last drafted in the 28th round by the Atlanta Braves in 2005.

He's become a force in the Tigers bullpen this season, posting a 6-0 record with a 1.39 ERA in 19 appearances. He's walked only eight batters in 45.1 innings.

The Minnesota Twins took LSU redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Blake Martin in the 17th round (516th overall). Martin, who has started 16 games in 2008, is 5-3 with a 4.88 ERA in 83 innings.

Jared Bradford was the first Tigers senior selected, as the right-hander was taken in the 18th round (545th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Bradford has been one of LSU's most consistant pitchers in both starting and relief roles over the past two seasons, compiling a 20-8 record with 10 saves since 2007.

Senior Michael Hollander came off the board shortly after Bradford, as the Tigers infielder (drafted as a shortstop) became a Texas Ranger in the 20th round (603rd overall). Hollander, a four-year letterwinner, moved from shortstop to third base in 2008, batting .307.

Later, junior right-hander Jordan Brown was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 39th round (1,181st overall). It marked the fourth time in his career that Brown had been drafted (31st round by Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2005; 21st round by Braves in 2006; 45th round by Cincinnati Reds in 2007).

My daughter came down with an upper respiratory infection last weekend and it was my ten year anniversary. I couldn't leave my wife with our sick child on our anniversary. (She's doing just fine now by the way) The plan was for us all to have come down.

I promised over a month ago to get our garage cleared out this weekend..so it looks like I'll be watching the series on TV....unless someone can hook salty up with a ticket for Sunday's game. I'll provide the beer for the day!

I just paid for three football season tickets last week...:cry: They're not getting any cheaper! Tickets for this weekend's games are sold out and selling for hundreds on eBay. I can't justify the expense with the wife. But, again, if anyone is willing to donate...I've got the beer!

See, I can completely understand last weekend. you get the pass on that one.

Now this weekend, and having to clean the garage?!? Thats weak. No pass for you. It's a 5:00 game. Thats at least 7-8 hours of tailgating before the game even starts. And there will be plenty of people outside the box for the game.

And then add to that, the absolute last 2 (maybe 3) games at the box, EVER. That just has to be made! I wanna see that tralier Rockin and Rollin.

I'm getting excited about this series...wondering if the week off will be detrimental to :LSU231:. But I'm really getting a little tired of hearing about the Anteater's incredible pitching/bullpen. I think if you go back and look at our bullpen during the streak, LSU's numbers are pretty incredible in their own right...and add the incredible offensive production and sparkling defense...and you get, well, 23 in a row and counting.

I'm ready, and I hope all of you are! Let's get it on!!
