LSU (2-0) will go for the series sweep in the finale set for 1 p.m. Sunday. Junior left-hander Greg Smith (2-0, 2.35 in 2004) will make his first career start against Colonel lefty Marcus Markray (transfer from Paris JC).

Why Greg? I can understand useing Meier Tues. but why not Determan? is greg going pitch 3 there determan 3 then faircloth 3? if im not mistaken i heard Laval say Smith was great for 1 good for 2 and fair for 3 or more last year. so i dont understand this move unless Smith has changed since last year it doent make sense to me!

Greg Smith was a starting pitcher at Alexandria Senior High School. The Louisiana Sports Writers Association voted him Mr. Baseball, the state's top player, in 2002.
It's taken him two seasons to work his way into the starting rotation at LSU, but Smith said he knew he'd have to wait when he got to Baton Rouge and saw the pitching staff.

"That was fine with me, because we had guys like Jake Tompkins and Bo Pettit ahead of me," Smith said, "but from Day One when I got here, my ultimate goal was to be in the starting rotation before I left."

Looks like Smoke may be planning on him being a starter this year.

Sophomore left-hander Clay Dirks is scheduled to start Saturday. Dirks, who also missed 2003 because of elbow surgery, was a freshman All-American with an 8-2 record last season. He is poised for a breakout.

Junior lefty Greg Smith will start Sunday. He was outstanding as a middle reliever last season, striking out 35 batters in 302/3 innings with a 2.35 ERA. He will get his first chance in the rotation this weekend.

"Now we can finally mix and match, from righties to lefties to hard throwers and soft throwers," Laval said. "I don't know the last time LSU could really start three lefties on the weekend, not that that's necessary. And we still have maybe the best lefty out of the bullpen (junior Jason Determann)."

The bullpen also includes right-handers Meier, Jordan Faircloth and Brandon Nall, plus a trio of transfers who could break into prominent roles -- Chase Dardar from Delgado Community College, Chris Cahill from Florida Gulf Coast and Edgar Ramirez from Florida International.
