ive been hearing rumblings from some high school football officials that there could possibly be a work strike. Principals are trying to cut funding to the officials and they aren't having it, they plan on sitting out if this happens and what happens to high school football in this state if that does happen?

Saw a report on the news a couple weeks ago that said their beef was that they wanted more input on the rules. Regardless looks like possible trouble brewing. If so, just like at every level of sports they'll just get lesser qualified replacements.

Don't remember how much FB officials get paid but it's less than baseball/softball. I've seen softball umpires get $80.00 each after their travel.

shane, ever notice where HS football officials park? They arrive together and park inside the fence of the stadium, if there is such parking. They get paid at halftime and don't phuck around ONE second after the game. They have very quick exits, like Elvis, only they leave as a group.

The incident in Covington last year where a police lieutenant arrested and handcuffed two referees after the referees asked him for help moving fans away from the field really pissed off the officials. That dumb sonofabitch got himself demoted, suspended, and retired early along with his partner. But I suspect that the officials are demanding some serious backup from the police after that.

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. People don't realize just how much authority officials/umpires have. There was a guy in our Association (back when we had one) who told an entire team to catch the bus.

Was this during the game or after? If after and the crowd was coming onto the field the cop could have done it for their safety?

Police escort people for their safety, they don't arrest them.

It was during the 3rd quarter. The referee asked the cops to move a number of spectators from the sidelines back to the stands. Apparently the cop thought the hometown crowd could do what ever they wanted and told the referee to get back to his game. He got into an argument with the referee stopping the game for 5 minutes. The referee then ordered the cop and spectators off the field (which is within the rules they work under) to resume the game and the cop arrested him for "public intimidation" and arrested a second referee who tried to calm him down. They were handcuffed and driven away in a squad car.

It made national news and outraged referees who refused to work any more games with the Covington Police. The Covington Police had a reputation for rude and aggressive behavior and the city had hired a new chief to get the department under control. He immediately dropped the charges and began an investigation which led to two officers being demoted and suspended. The Sgt. retired immediately and the Lieutenant who started the trouble was told to retire or be dismissed for cause, which would cost him his pension. So he retired last month, but is talking lawsuit over being threatened with his pension and forced into retirement.
