Touche Anyway, I don't see all of this happening and quite frankly, I wouldn't want it to. I like our conference as is. Giving up the Florida game every year would suck. But maybe there would be a way for it to make sense. I just can't wrap my mind around it.
You beat me to it Hawker, but I see you had to get up early in the morning to do it. 16 is way too big. That means two 8-team divisions, and 7 guaranteed opponents every year. Less than half of the schedule is subject to change. Easier on the ADs who have to book the games, but it cuts down on the variety we as fans get to see every year. Then you probably play 2 out-of-division opponents each year on a rotating basis. That means you're looking at 6 years between matchups against teams that are in your conference? That's crazy. And the expanded conference schedule will give the coaches more ammo to avoid playing major non-conference opponents.
how about adding a few games to the schedule, scrapping the championship game and playing a round robin.
True !!! I was trying to be nice for Okie's sake.. She's a member of the Rick Dixon fan club. :hihi:.
Looks like a lot of us had the same thought about Tulane. How long has it been since Tulane was relevant on the national sports scene - I seem to remember baseball being really good a few years ago - as I recall the last time they tried to go national in basketball it did not work out very well. I still like the idea of the SEC adding Texas, Oklahoma, UNC and VT. I don't think adding another Florida or Kentucky school helps the conference media market that much - likewise adding GT wouldn't add that much in Georgia. I doubt it will happen, but it is fun to talk about. ldskule:
Let's see, we add four teams, and each team has a 15 game season between September 1 and Christmas. Then go to a NC playoff. I like it, but if it ever happens, I might as well go ahead and sign off on the divorce papers before the season starts - then I won't be bothered with it in mid-season. ldskule:
After the mid-majors get raided by the BCS conferences that lose teams, the Tulanes of the world will have to just consolidate into a new mid-major conference. Here's my doomsday scenario.. just for fun... Possible Scenario... BigTen (16) Illinois Indiana Iowa Michigan Michigan State Minnesota Northwestern Ohio State Penn State Purdue Wisconsin *Rutgers *Connecticut *Syracuse *Missouri *Notre Dame SEC responds (16) Bama Arkansas Auburn Florida Georgia Kentucky LSU Ole Miss Miss. St. South Carolina Tennessee Vanderbilt *Texas *Texas A&M *Florida St. *Miami Pac-10 Expands Arizona Arizona St. Cal Oregon Oregon St. Stanford UCLA USC Washington Washington St. *BYU *Utah *Boise St. *Fresno St. *Nevada *TCU ACC adjusts by absorbing BigEast (lost Miami, FSU 16) Boston College Clemson Duke G-Tech Maryland UNC NCST Virginia V-Tech Wake Forest *Pittsburgh *South Florida *West Virginia *Louisville *Cincinnati *ECU Big East folds Big12 (stays at 12... not worth getting to 16, yet) Baylor Colorado Iowa St. Kansas Kansas St. Nebraska Oklahoma Oklahoma St. Texas Tech *Colorado St. *SMU *Rice WAC and MWC merge, raid SBC (12) New Mexico SDSU UNLV Wyoming Air Force Hawaii Idaho New Mexico State San Jose State Utah State *North Texas *Arkansas St. CUSA adds (Down to 9, absorbs SBC to expand to 16) Marshall Houston Memphis Southern Miss Tulane Tulsa UAB UCF UTEP *Western Kentucky *UL-Monroe *UL-Lafayette *Troy *FIA *Middle Tennessee *FIU MAC Stays intact... Because no one wants them!
This expansion business is bat-chit crazy. The Big Ten would add four nobody's and a has-been while the SEC would add four top-10 contenders? The SEC top tier could forget about their confident 10-win seasons if that happens. They might forget about National Championships, too. Its tough enough to go undefeated in the SEC without adding four more contenders. People forget how important that it is for the SEC to have six teams that regularly lose most of their conference games and still fill their stadiums. How about A&M and SMU instead of Texas? Or Miami and NC State instead of FSU? The SEC can't overload with top-10 contenders and remain successful. If the SEC expands it has to take on lower-tier members too, or lose advantages to the top teams feasting in weaker conferences.
Sheez, all these scenarios are way overboard. All that needs to happen is that the Big 10 and PAC 10 getting to 12 teams. Seriously. That's it. That way, all the major conferences have championship games. Notre Lame to Big 10. Utah and BYU or Boise St. to PAC 10. Simple as that.
