because the working middle class can see the welfare moochers. They don't see the idle rich. The republicans have done a masterfull job at making ordinary citizens think they have more in common with the rich than the poor. I would love a republican party that catered a little more to the middle class, but the fact is that most of us are at least 2 zeros away on our W-2 from being a true constituent of the modern republican party.
They vote Republican because they agree with the values of the party. Democrats continue to divide this country into "we and they"; they strive on class hatred. This country prides itself on the opportunities for every individual to earn wealth. But God help them if they actually do it. They then become demonized. The problem with this country is not that there are too many wealthy people, but that there are not enough of them. I wish we all could be wealthy. Oh, by the way. Most wealthy people got there because they worked their butts off and continue to do so. More power to them. This country has never looked favorable on the "idle rich" which is why there are so few of them.
The republicans do it to, they just take the side of the haves. Example: Callling the estate tax the "death tax" while not pointing out that starting next year, the first 3 million is tax exempt. Example: Claiming to be anti abortion, yet doing nothing about it while having control of both houses of congress from 1992 to 2006 and the presidency 20 out of the last 28 years, and control of the supreme court (although tenious until O'Conner retired) most of that time, and a solid majority for the last two years. Personally, I think they want to keep the abortion issue alive, that way they keep the religous right in their hip pocket. Imagine, if the religous vote doesn't have abortion, they may start to notice some things going on under rep. control. Like a rise in the working poor.
i wish i were one of the few, the proud, the "idle rich". They could demonize me all they wanted...unless, of course, this were 1917 Russia. A lot of hard-working, industrious, middle class (50K-250K+) vote Republican because they traditionally lower OUR taxes (and protect my 2nd amendment rights). By-and-large I dont give a rats azz about the idle rich. I find the argument, "don't pay attention to your insignificant tax increase, look at how we're soaking them," ludicrous.
Yup, me too. Sometimes I may have fleeting thoughts of " Boy, it would be nice if I had that, etc..."., but I don't feel envious/jealous of what OTHER people (esp. the super rich) have as it is just their luck, or achievements in life. I would rather concentrate on what I am able to achieve, and count my blessings of what I have, including my family.
Both parties do, obviously. It's not their wealth that I demonize. It's the privilege and influence that it buys to enhance and improve their wealth at the expense of the middle class and the working poor. Most of the poor in this country are not on the dole, they are just working low-paying jobs. Many of them do, but not the very richest, which is who I'm talking about. "Most" is a bit of a stretch. I don't suppose you could document that.
