I agree that we don't need guns on campus, and that the legislation is a mistake. But as far as that is not the kind of crimes we have at LSU, it is not the kind of crime any campus has until it occurs. That argument is a rephrasing of "it can't happen here." Yea, right. And I happen to belive an armed student body could stop a mass killing. I just believe that more guns on campus multiplies the chances of gun-related violence.
Perhaps. Or the armed vigilante could have accidentally killed raised the body count. Seriously, have you ever heard of buck fever? I don't think people realize it might be tougher to shoot a human being than it seems. Hollywood lies (except in the movie Dumb and Dumber when Harry tries to kill the guy at the end)
This goes for all instances of drawing a weapon in self defense... If you pull a gun for self defense, you better be prepared to use it and be prepared to live with killing someone in the name of self defense. If you pull it and the criminal takes it away from you, it is highly likely that you will be wounded or killed with your own weapon. As far as on campus goes, I believe that if a citizen completes all the requirements for a concealed carry permit, they should have the right to carry that weapon in a currently designated school "firearm free" zone. FYI - LA law currently prohibits carrying permitted concealed weapons in the following locations: * A law enforcement office, station, or building; * A detention facility, prison, or jail; * A courthouse or courtroom, provided that a judge may carry such a weapon in his own courtroom; * A polling place; * A meeting place of the governing authority of a political subdivision; * The state capitol building; * Any portion of an airport facility where the carrying of firearms is prohibited under federal law, except that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, if the firearm is encased for shipment, for the purpose of checking such firearm as lawful baggage; * Any church, synagogue, mosque or similar place of worship; * A parade or demonstration for which a permit is issued by a governmental entity; * Any portion of the permitted area of an establishment that has been granted a Class A-General retail permit, as defined in Part II of Chapter 1 or Part II of Chapter 2 of Title 26 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes of 1950, to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises. * Any school "firearm free zone" as defined in R.S. 14:95.6.
damn straight. last thing i needed was to have to tell a drunk fball player WITH A PISTOL to turn down their stereo, or stop smoking pot, or get the girl out of his room.
I understand that playing loud music might disturb other residents but what the hell do you care if he was smoking pot or banging his girlfriend? Are you a member of the anti fun police or are you simply a rodent?
The body count at V Tech was about 33 if I remember correctly. If an armed student had been in the first classroom that Cho opend fire on he might have shot 1,2, 3 or 4 or 5 victims before he himself was under fire. Who knows. If the body count had been reduced to 4 or 5 by the actions of an armed student then there would be 27 or 28 human beings who would still be alive today. Your buck fever analogy is irrelevant. There is a huge difference between setting out to deliberatly kill an animal and shooting an armed assailant in a life or death self defense situation. I doubt that many people would get buck fever if the deer was about the shoot back at them.
I get what you're saying. I didn't clearly state my point. Sorry about that. But you're saying that everyone is an excellent shooter? Even under fire and under pressure? And I'm not JUST talking about VT, but any other college. And not just in a classroom, but anywhere on campus. But buck fever in my opinion is forgetting sight alignment and target picture. Forgetting about good steady trigger pull. Ever shot at anybody that was shooting at you. Being so nervous that you just fire rounds with tunnel vision. I think you give too many people too much credit.
Exactly. So we allow everybody on campus to pack iron in hopes of preventing a million-to-one shooting by a lunatic? That would leave us with a couple of gunfights on campus every year when a fight gets out of control. It's the poorest logic I've every heard. Notice that they don't want to allow concealed guns in the state capitol.
School shootings is not something that you can think is going to happen on a daily basis. It's not the wild west
