You misunderstand. I don't think that Chavis let us down, I think his defense had some rare breakdowns. I'm pretty down on Craig Loston today. I didn't script the defense, but it appeared to me that Loston was responsible for McCarron's TD run. We were in man coverage and Loston was free and he didn't cover the open middle. Loston also missed his tackle on the TD screen pass and either he or Minter blew his coverage on Yeldon.
Got ya. I do agre that there were some player breakdowns and mistakes. Loston does appear to be prone to some mental errors. My issue w Chavis, whom I consider out best and most reliable coach was going with a prevent D on the final drive. LSU was doing well with a prevent D. We basically gave them some easy first down, out of bounds passes to move the ball up the field. The TD play was a breakdown but I dont think Bama wins if we play the same D we did all second half. If we aggressive and Bama still wins I have no complaints
Well, we have hindsight. Chavis made the smart play with a prevent defense, it was just too soft. Bama had 93 seconds and had no time outs and had 1 pass for zero yards in the second half. 5 three-and outs. The smart money was that McCarron wouldn't be able to hit four big passes and get down the field to score. But he did it.
I respectfully disagree. I was screaming when I seen the prevent D. Im just not at all a fan of it. It too often doesnt work. I rather stick with whats been working, an aggressive D. I do agree if you go prevent, at least make it not THAT soft. Try to keep them off the sidelines, keeping it in bounds.
Listened to Greg Bowser last night on the way home. He mentioned two issues he didn't like about the two drives at the end of each half. First they played too loose in the backfield then more importantly they gave them the outside instead of forcing the receivers into the middle of the field. Also they did the same thing in the first half so why not try to continue the defense that had worked so well for the first 29 minutes. There were coaching and personnel breakdowns on both sides of the ball and as I said it was a team loss Chief brought us close to the victory on D as did Stud, Krag and Les on the O. The players gave their hearts and souls to get there and played the best ball of the year. I am dissapointed we didn't make the first down at the end and didn't hold on the last drive but I don't throw the baby out with the bath water. IF the team takes this as a positive and inspiration and the coaches gain confidence in what we can do. We can take this lesson and use it to reach new heights in the coming years.
Totally agree. That's why I'll never understand playing prevent or soft zone in college football. Miles' blunders aside, it's hard to understand why we went away from the scheme that had shut Bama out the entire 2nd half. I get that you don't want to give up the big play, but when your D is giving up 15-20 yards per play in a soft zone, it kind of defeats the purpose. And, since PI is not a spot foul, coach your guys to hold or do whatever they have to if they're beat on a long route. I usually agree with you Red, but not this time. How can you say the prevent was the right call? Why not continue with the same defensive scheme that had befuddled them the entire 2nd half. Their coach even admitted that they knew what we were going to do in that situation because they'd picked it up on film. That's part of the reason they made it look so easy, because they had prepared for it. Remember the old cliche' - 'The only thing the prevent defense does is prevent you from winning'.
Exactly, if we deliver the knock out blow when we had the chance we don't have to worry about giving up the late TD. Instead they play all pussified and safe. Yep. Outstanding. Of course it is ABL
I can't disagree with this. My dad and I were going back and forth on this during the 4th quarter of the A & M game. As he put it, "We have to put them away, so they can't win the game on accident." Last night, Bama won the game on accident. And it sucks, suck, SUCKS.
No killer instinct. When our coaching staff has a chance to really put things out of reach they always play it safe. Game management killed us last night... They were aggressive when they needed to be passive and passive when they needed to be aggressive. It happens a lot but last night it killed us.
