Mingo definitely has the frame to bulk up. Some are even talking about him bulking up enough to be a DE.
Many a lanky high school back has developed into a prototype SEC lineman. I thought Nick was really good at quickly identifying a player's best position.
I love the thought of a 6'5" LB, who would have the ability to tip or intercept passes thrown over the middle.
here's the game preview from the News Star (Monroe) for what will probably be one of the better games in the state: Leesville at West Monroe Kickoff: 6 p.m., Saturday (KLIP 105.3-FM) Who/What to watch: LEESVILLE: Team is filled with experience on offense. QB Travante Stallworth has committed to Auburn and mans the spread with best target in WR Demetrius Mark. RB Michael Ford – an LSU commit – helps the Wampus Cats mix it up in the backfield. The defense, on the other hand, is fairly new with the only experience coming in safety Cassetti Brown, who has committed to Tech. WEST MONROE: All eyes are on QB D.J. Banks, but he will get plenty of help from RB LaDarius Abrams and WR Andrian Manning and WR Tyler Cain. Defensively, Barkevious Mingo has moved from LB to DB and should be outstanding while LB Blake Brassell also returns. Get in the Game: Because of the weather problems, Rebel fans will now get a peak at two Top 20 teams. West Monroe is No. 2 in 5A and Leesville is No. 4 in 4A. Prediction: West Monroe
Not exactly. WM has 40 DB's over there and about 1/2 of those are pint-sized. Supposedly, they only have 6-8 guys that can back-peddle without falling on their butts. (this info coming from a coach). My point is, it speaks just as much to the weakness of WM's secondary as it does to the talent of Mingo. :crystal::geaux::crystal::geaux::crystal:
Mingo looks like a young, lanky Renaldo Turnbull to me. If he bulked up, I think DE would be a good college position for him. Someone long and fast rushing the QB would be a nice luxury in the SEC. Regarding being a 6'5" safety, why not? Look at Usain Bolt; everyone used to say a tall man can not run 100 or 200m fast - uh, I think he dispelled that traditional belief. Point being, just because it is not done routinely, does not mean it would not be productive. A 6'5" guy playing tall wide receivers should be an advantage, IMO.
