This all a last grasp for power. The AP and Coaches poll were it for years. There was no out-roar like this when the BCS #2 was different than the polls #2 multiple times, which could have affected at least two of the games' outcomes. Now they realize that if the public excepts their #1 not being in the Championship their relevance moves back to every other poll on the block. They would be just part of the equation, which in reality they are just part of the BCS equation if everyone thought the polls were correct the BCS would not have given the computer average the same weight as the human poll average. For six years there was never a real discussion to add a a clause added to automatically give it to the #1 in the human polls. Why? Because it was always completely obvious who the #1 team should have been at the end of the year as all number 1's were undefeated and the only undefeated team except for Ohio State last year, so they could not get it wrong. This year the writers and the coaches had to actually think about it since all had one loss, and they got it wrong. The rest of the BCS formula fixed the problem, which it what it was obviously supposed to do or why does the formula exist. Making the next question do we even need the human polls??????
This is why they created a BCS. Because human polls are subjective and vulnerable to politics, favoritism, and emotion. They created the system and it is the system they must live with. I understand the arguments USC makes but if Oklahoma had lost they would be #2 in the human polls and #3 in the BCS. It is the human polls that gave us BYU for a national champ after they won the Holiday Bowl; gave Tom Osborne a NC as a retirement gift over Paterno; couldn't decide between Ga Tech and Colorado, etc, etc, etc.... If the coaches vote for USC then it is their credibility and integrity that will be in question. I had heard a radio guy mention that Lou Holtz said he would vote for USC if given the opportunity. I don't know if that is true and find it hard to believe, but if he pulls such a stunt he will be persona non grata in the SEC and the Tigers will destroy his little peacocks on the field. Why is USC #1 in the polls? That is a question that no one is asking. Are they the undisputed best team in college football? Do they have the best record in football? What makes them so much more deserving of being in the National Championship than LSU and OU? Why is the AP poll suddenly the holy grail of football? Simply put, USC is (barely) #1 because they lost before LSU and OU. That's it. No other reason. The BCS has worked!! It looked without bias or prejudice at three one-loss teams, measured the same data for each team and found the two teams most deserving of playing for the NC - the two teams that towed the hardest road to the championship game - the two teams that played the toughest schedules including an extra championship level game. It is the media and USC hacks that need to just shut-up. Frankly, I think all this fawning over USC and talk of robbing LSU of a NC should we win the Sugar Bowl is going to backfire. I smell a backlash against USC before Jan. 1st. and it would be well deserved. All empathy I had for USC is now gone. Their AD and coach are unprofessional and dishonest to attack and denigrate LSU. LSU is the clear #2 team-both in the polls and in the BCS. There is no question LSU deserves a shot at the national title and if the coaches rob them it will be the greatest injustice in sports history.
LA Times is the king of the bleeding heart liberal everyone is a vicitm publication. They will run this in the ground, b/c now USC is a "victim". Why would we expect USC to take responsibility for losing to Insight.com bowl bound Cal?
I wonder if Lou Holtz would be talking like that if South Carolina had to play LSU next year. By the time the Cocks come up on the Tiger's schedule again Holtz will be gone. He should be grateful that Nick called off the dogs in the 4th quarter this year or it could have been real ugly.
quoted by California coach "I don't get to watch the other teams much," ...................................................................................................... This shows you why we don't need stupid people voting teams like usc#1 If he is a football coach and had any brains at all he would keep up with the top 25 and know what the hell he was voting for. If I'm a coach and I have to vote, even if I didn't see the other teams. I would know which conference was #1, and that LSU beat a top 5 team twice, and beat an undefeated top 25 team. I would be responsible not ignorant and this whole mess never would've happened. Go to hell usc and the coaches that were ignorant enough to vote you #1
