We have 4-wheel drive vehicles, cuz. It's going to be an ambush anyway. We are honest but ruthless individuals. Nobody is objecting to amateurs in any field writing and giving it away. Professionals in any field can get paid for their work and do not give it away. People will pay for Tom Clancy or J.K. Rowling or The Beatles. It is how capitalism works, Karl. There is a word for the collective ownership that you propose. I agree with you in every respect as far as public domain works are concerned. Make it as cheap and easy as possible. Almost the same with copyrighted work, make it cheaper and easier with technology but still allow authors to make a living at their trade. Anyone that imagines a person can do professional work without supporting himself by his work is living in dreamland on a trust fund and has no idea how real professions work. Are you such a cheap SOB that you wouldn't pay $2.99 for a Richard Dawkins Ebook? Even though it saves you $30 over a book, you would still steal from this author rather than drop 3 buck at the Ebookstore? You real don't understand the concept of professionals that work for a living? Priceless.
of course i would, and this is the future. i currently buy kindle books for 9.99 each, and i dont mind. although i am very annoyed that i cannot loan my kindle books to friends. it makes me want to steal. and i should note that i never even steal ebooks, its just easier not to. i wouldnt feel that bad about it if i did though. i would feel terrible about stealing other things. i wonder why that is. also, i read 46 books since this time last year, every one of them purchased legitimately. its no that i am cheap or i want to steal. this discussion is about how media should work.
good news, i finally used the kindle loaning feature. a friend "sent" me his copy of a book and now i read it for two weeks and he cannot read it. then it magically vanishes from my kindle. kinda cool. no extra revenue for the writer though, poor bastard.
seriously? this is cool. does it go back to his elibrary? this would encourage me to not read half a book and actually finish it in a timely fashion.
on his end is says "loaned". he cant read it. says the date it returns. i have paid nothing and i get the book for two weeks. see red if we steal more books we pressure the powers that be to open stuff up and make us happy by allowing us things like this.
clearly there will be a simple hack to keep it on yours if you loan it. but that wouldnt encourage me to finish the book. i wonder how these authors feel about losing all this $. I wonder if they will stop writing.
The writer has not been swindled as long as the ebook was legally purchased. Books and Ebooks can be "loaned", just not duplicated and reproduced.
file sharing is file sharing. call it "swindled", or dont. i am reading a copy of the book and i have paid nothing. exactly as if i had copied it from a person off the internet. in fact that is literally what i did, copy it from a friend via the internet.
