Here's a tidbit from a post John provided in another thread...containing HS stats for a couple of guys. I know it's HS, but really...we have nothing else to go on with either Lee or Hatch. HATCH Rushing Senior -- 55 carries, -(20) yards, -(0.36) average, 4 TDs Passing Senior -- 79-of-160 (49.4%), 1,672 yards, 19 TDs, 7 INTs JARRETT LEE Rushing Junior -- 57 carries, 197 yards, 3.5 average , 4 TDs Senior -- 11 carries, 107 yards, 9.7 average, 4 TDs Passing Junior -- 239-of-347 (68.9%), 3,425 yards, 40 TDs, 8 INTs Senior -- 193-of-314 (65.8%), 2,726 yards, 31 TDs, -- Neither set the world on fire with their feet, so not saying Lee is a dual-threat by any stretch...but just trying to figure out where people get the opinion that Hatch is.
vs. Middle Tenn St, he came in and ran a few times on set plays. averaged over 6 a carry. Yeah it mid tenn st, but dude looked comfy doing it.
Here's the stats from the MTSU game, and I see that Hatch ran 4 times, averaging 6.8ypc. Didn't get to actually watch the game, but...along with the stats...I'll take your word for it that he looked comfy running the option. Rushing No Gain Loss Net TD Lg Avg -------------------------------------------- Jacob Hester 10 58 1 57 0 22 5.7 Ryan Perrilloux 8 52 15 37 0 16 4.6 K. I can't get past the fact that in his Sr. season in high school, he rushed for -20 yds on the season.
Last years record against those teams can not really be compared to how we might do this year. The landscape of the SEC has changed dramatically. Coaching changes, player changes, location of games changes. There are many factors outside of the play of the quarterback that will have an impact on the outcomes of games. Our biggest strengths last year are even stronger this year, in many phases. As has been pointed out by many, Matt was not what many would consider one of the best quarterbacks in college football. Yet he lead a strong team, with a strong supporting cast to the National Championship, and won. Yes, his experience was a very useful attribute, but he did have his flaws and in many cases it was the talent around him that made the team successful. The same as either of these two will be. I don't believe that we will make a repeat season, but I can very well see this being another 11 win season under coach Miles. The pieces of the puzzle will all fall into place.
And LSU doesn't offer that??? I thought that was the main point that was so "insightful" to some of the people here. Bradford as a freshman last year was much more impressive than Flynn as a 5th year senior last year. Granted, Flynn played a much, much higher level of competition than Bradford did. But, I don't think Bradford had a better supporting cast than Flynn did last year.
no, that was my point. bradford had a good supporting cast and they won their conference and went to a BCS bowl. LSU DOES offer the same thing. sorry, i thought you were on the "we're screwed" side. my bad.
Maybe I'm an optimist today, but I think we'll be ok with Lee or Hatch behind center. Assuming they can hand the ball off and not throw interceptions, we should be able to drive the ball and score points. And the defense should carry the day in most games. As somebody said, this is a system. Of course, the QB is an integral part of the system, but nevertheless just one part. Would it have better with RP? Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know. But I can think of teams with much worse QB situations than the one LSU has. We will have a team that just won a NC and has the framework to hold its own in any game on the 2008 schedule. We should probably quit feeling sorry for ourselves.
