Welcome to the board. I agree with your assessment. I'm thinking (hoping) the offense is gonna be less predictable...or even if it is predictable, we're gonna do some things others teams can't do anything about, even if they predict it. We just have too many playmakers. Man I hope I'm right! D Peterson has all the makings of a real 'secret' weapon. With TT, RR, and Shep, that should be enough to make ANY defense worry. But add DP to the mix, and there shouldn't be any way to totally stop the passing game. And that should allow the running game to succeed. Of course, a lot depends on the OL and the QB for my plan to come together...
I would like to know how JJ underperformed last year. Not trying to stir a s**** storm, but JJ never lost us a game by his performance. It has been pointed out that his stats are decent compared to other young QBs his age. Obiviously he has things to work on, but what QB at this level doesn't. People say we need to rely on the QB play, but I believe the run game + Oline will give us far better results the year. The games are won in the trenches. I dont really see why JJ would play bad this year given better play around him.
IMO Jefferson is a much bigger threat outside the pocket. Why have we tried so hard to make him a pocket QB? Keep him moving, put more pressure on the D having to defend the entrie field. How bout more QB draws, rollouts and screen passes. I'm sick of seeing the bubble screen.
Because sooner or later he has to complete passes downfield. Defenses will just cheat up on the LOS and play a tight zone. If all you do is run rollouts and screens, outside LBs are going to key in on JJ and safeties will just come upfield to blow up any backs or receivers who manage to get open. JJ has good feet for noth-south running, but he is not shifty and not a running QB. Athletic linemen and linebackers would bring him down on draw plays for short yardage, and the option has been a disaster. If he's going to be SEC-caliber and move the ball consistently, then he has to learn how to quickly read defenses and move the chains from the pocket.
1) OL play running and passing game 2) Play calling..don't be so obvious when making substitutions as to what we are going to run 3) 3rd down defense. We have to get off the field on 3rd downs..too many times last season we were in 3rd and 5+ and couldn't get the job done
I think everyone still has those images of JJ getting sacked in big situations last season in thier heads and associates the loss to him..i agree that JJ really hasn't cost us a game by himself..hell he dosen't throw interceptions very often...if the OL can improve then everything else will fall into place..and from all reports that seems to be the case
I don't necessarily disagree with this, but last season, they didn't let him roll out enough. They tried too hard to make him a pocket passer. He is a good athlete, and should be allowed to utilize his athleticism when necessary.
Problem last year was that after we had run the roll outs and screens enough to make the safties come up..we never changed our game plan and threw it deep...got to have balance..doing one thing either way will kill you...
JJ is a decent runner and he cAn hurt people if they don't respect that. Also, people seem to forget the many midrange passes he threw over the middle for TD's. For every bad play or sack JJ had, I can name a good play to match. He will do just fine.
