Didn't the state have to jump through some hoops recently because in the mad dash to grab up as much post-Katrina FEMA money as possible, nobody paid any attention to the terms by which we would have to pay the money back? What's wrong with the Governor saying, this time we're going to know what we're getting into before we get into it?

He didn't turn it down. He says he wants to look at the conditions attached to accepting the money. That's wise in my book.

Sabanfan polticians should only think in the present term. Why should a governor be concerned about the long term health of his state when he can look good in the present, get re-elected, and then if the consequences rear their heads relax in knowing he is a lame duck anyway?

Well, isn't it up to the legislature whether or not to take the money, which will let Jindal kill 2 birds, stand up for his principles, and still get the money.

I agree that he should look at it carefully. We're not in a major jam here. We can cut costs and not borrow money from the feds.

When I first commented about this in other threads, I said it would be political suicide for jindal to turn this money down. I was assuming we were talking about money that would not have to be paid back for projects and the like. If we're talking about loans, then he definitely needs to take a look at it.

What he is turning down is short term Unemployment benefit expansion $. The reason he is turning it down is because it would require a permanent change in La law that would increase unemployment premiums on small business to pay for it after the $ ran out in less than 3 years. If I remember correctly, it is about 90 million.

Lately Jindal has been repeating the same point that it "makes no sense for us to take temporary federal dollars and create permanent state obligations." Smart move.

I'm no longer a resident of Louisiana, but I totally believe he's doing the right thing. I only wish our governor would do the same.
