We definitely went away with what was successful in the 4th quarter as we neared FG range....

And we didn't even accomplish the task of having the ball last....Bama did, and had they not screwed up clock management royally (a pet peeve of mine), they could have been in FG range at the end of regulation.

From an Ivan Maisel article on ESPN.com:
I guess the 2nd half was LSU turning it loose.

With a QB who occassionally makes stupid mistakes against a top 3 team, in their house, & who happens to have one of (if not THE) best defense in the country - that's when you think we should open it up?

I can understand the frustration, but put this into context. Better to keep this a low scoring game & win with ball control and conservative play calling than turn the ball over & hand the game away.

Man, look. There is a FINE LINE with some of you b/w criticizing a coaching staff and criticizing OBVIOUS flaws. I'll be the first to support the Tigers and our staff, but damn, I call a spade a spade. Just because some of us are criticizing our staff doesn't mean that we hate the team or are dissapointed about being 8-1... some of you really need to grow up and some others of you just need to shut-up. Some fans are tainted by the 2003 title. They expect similar things every year. How soon do we forget that we were struggling mightily in the 90's? Now that we know the potential for success we have at LSU, we expect greater things...And YES WE SHOULD! I'm not pointing fingers at anyone but some of you (you know who you are) are sucking our coaching staff's cock when CNS was just as bad in some aspects. No matter WHO the coach is, we'll always find something to complain about. Always. Until our own staff pulls things together, there WILL be criticism... Am I surprised that we're 8-1? Not at all. I thought, honestly, we'd be 9-0 right now. We have the talent and the coaching staff to do it.

Also, if I may add anything... it's ALWAYS the coaches fault.. ALWAYS. If you've never played high school sports, you may not understand, but you can't fault a player if it is, indeed, the coaches fault for not coaching the player to not make the mistakes... Or something... but there is such a thing as healthy criticism and I find nothing wrong with that. Saban did many things wrong and when ppl criticized him, it was ok? LSU is winning, we're 8-1. Is it luck? No, it's good coaching (not great) by the coaches and good execution (again, not great) by the players. Who knows? We're 8-1 and we're happy about that, but we SHOULD be (and who is denying that?) a lot better as a team. If that, my friends, doesn't fall on the coaches head, then what does? If our staff does something good, we praise them, if they blow something, we criticize them... :geauxtige

The field shortens and the defense tightens up considerably once you get to the 30. The flaw in your analysis is that you apparently don't take the opposing defense's skill into consideration. Bama is one of, if not the, best defenses in the country. If we start slinging the ball around down there, you are risking a turnover. Note, we had no turnovers. If we win 24-10 in regulation or 16-10 in OT, what's the damn difference, aside from some stressful moments for us fans? It seems to me that most of the criticisms here are based upon people not wanting to be nervous during a game. We are winning. In the final analysis, that's all that matters.

SF, you have beaten the "ugly win" syndrome to death it appears

but ultimately you are correct....a win is a win

It's all in your attitude. You have to realize that a football game is 60 minutes/4 quarters long. Since LSU has talent and we clearly do not suck, then we are going to be in every game we play. When things start out badly, you have to have faith that they will get better, rather than succumbing to fears of losing and not being able to really enjoy the game. In fact, after Bama put up the 10th point, I said to no one in particular: it's like golf when you triple bogey the first hole. My attitude is "bad start, good finish". I never felt we were going to lose that game yesterday.

i have little problem with the playcalling yesterday.

but i have to disagree with SF a bit. some probably think that lsu is so good that the coaches are screwing up by playing it close to the vest allowing overmatched opponents to stay close. lsu is winning most of the close games, which is a testament to something, but if you play with fire...

ya seriously ive seen times this year where benny is single covered. I want to know who can cover him on a fly? Just let him burn the guy and let JR throw it up to him.

It wasn't a fly pattern that was run in the second half, it was an out and up!. Very successful.... Let's face it. we are what we are. Let's not change what is working. We have a great 2-headed running attack (once Addai is healthy). It may not be as exciting to watch as wide open offenses are, but it is ball control, which keeps our Defense off the field and well rested. I feel that we have a VERY balanced team in all 3 aspects. Let's just take care of Ole Miss, Arkansas, and the SEC Championship.
