It doesn't matter what phrase is used some group somewhere is going to cry and whine ! Actually if my history serves me correct the word thug comes from a group of worshipers who followed Kali and dates back to the 13 hundreds. Just remember the Flinstones like to have a gay old time. Yes, the Thuggi tribe, who literally just murdered people constantly. And, you're right. When a particular phrase is prescribed only to a particular groupe of people in particular situations, its meaning becomes pretty transparent.
I can't agree. There were damn sure plenty of white thugs where I grew up and we called them that. There were plenty of colorful racial epithets used when that was the intent but "thug" was not one of them. It basically means "merciless criminal" to most folks. I agree with 'nupe that calling kids "thugs" is silly-ass rhetoric and folks really mean "kids acting out like thugs". But I think taking racial offense at the very mention of this 1,000-year-old word is being too . . . damn . . . sensitive. A quick Google search reveals no racial taunting by white middle aged men, but a whole lot of its use by black rap artists. Page after page. I've read 8 dictionary definitions and not one yet has defined "thug" as a racial slur.
It's not nearly as much about the definition so much as it is the context and usage. Your experiences are all well and good, but in my experiences, I've yet to hear someone call a white dude a "thug". That's not to say that "thug", in itself, is a racial slur per se', but when it's only prescribed to young, black men, then it begins to carry a certain connotation.
