I believe the TD drive was 4 passes and 2 runs. 2 passes for 20 yards each. Threw on 1st down. That was nice to see. Coaches trusted him and he delivered. Nice drive by RR also.
It is good to hear from ESPN announcers that coach K had said that Lee has more than what he is showing. That's is VERY encouraging....... and also mentioning Beckham as the best receiver he had ever worked with!
And that is why we won't "unleash Lee" like some are requesting. Lee looked great tonight BECAUSE we ran the ball so much. It opens the whole game up when you get 4-7 yards up the middle even when they have 8 in the box. I had serious worries about Stud, but I think that getting rid of Crow was the best thing that could have happened. Others may call for a more open offense, but I think Stud is doing a wonderful job. I have not been a big supporter of Lee in the past when it was a choice between Lee and Jefferson, but Lee has finally done it! He has turned the corner! This season is going to be a dandy one with Lee with his head on straight and Stud letting our big o-line, Ware, and Ford do what they do best.
I know I might get burned for this but this is my honest opinion and not trying to take anything away from Lee's performance tonight. Just my observations... The good news on offense is that Lee throws quick and knows where he is going. The bad news is that he is staring down his WRs like crazy. I can live with his stats and hope he can get away with it but I counted 2 maybe 3 plays where he checked off a WR and the WR he checked to was on the same side of the field as the #1 option. I see teams from here on out doing everything they can to pressure Lee and make him make a mistake with his accuracy. Because right now he is going to his WR with zero hesitation. That is great but it caused him to target a few WRs bumped before they reached the 3rd down marker on 3rd down and the INT. If he learns to look to the opposite side of the field or do a quick pump fake then he could be exactly what we need the rest of the season. Nice job by the WRs hanging on to almost every pass tonight. This defense is NASTY. Don't take this post as me stirring up a QB debate but just pointing out our main weakness on offense. If he can accomplish scanning the field a little more we will see more down field passes for big plays and therefore open up the running game even more. That is the recipe for a Championship.
Just pointing out: But a QB doesn't HAVE to turn his entire head to read the defense. Yes, some QB's will move their entire head to draw the safeties one way or another (Brees, Brady, etc. are masters of this), but if Lee is keeping his head straight, and moving his eyes to scan the field... There's no way of REALLY knowing that he's actually starring down WR's. There' no camera angle looking him right in the face. The tell-tale way of defenitively proving a QB is locking in on a WR too much is watching his passes get consistantly broken up or picked off. Only 7 of Lee's last 37 pass attempts have resulted in incompletions... Perhaps he should give the drastic "head turn" to improve his completion % even more though.
Agree but for the first time, especially in the 2nd half he looked settled. And composed. Even showing patience to wait for the receiver to get open. One even on a screen that you're taught to just fire out there. And he throws one of the more catchable balls you'll see. Needs to improve what you said as well as hitting players in stride. Receivers bailed him out on quite a few to make up for week 1.
Just to clarify I think he had a great game. I counted numerous times where his head was not looking straight ahead and directly at the WR he was targeting. If he can do that all season I have no issues to worry about and he may because he is decisive and releases it quickly. I am not the only one talking about this and I assume most coaches in the SEC are paying attention and that is the reason I have some worries. Most of us thought LSU would have exploded on offense tonight but we were very conservative with our play calling and throws. 2 or 3 30+ yard completions and one was a PA pass. I am just saying if he can work on that just a little more or even sneak it in once or twice a series then we could really open up this offense no matter who we play. We basically had 1 big play tonight and that was the PA pass. Our runs were suffocated and our throws were conservative and that is not a bad game plan against MSU. I am thinking more about the future and not just this game.
That was very good patience on that screen. I think he almost at the point of being complete if he can add those few wrinkles. He doesn't have to do it all game but sprinkle it in here and there. The quick passes and knowing where he wants to go has and will be very effective throughout the season especially on 3rd and short.
