We just signed another preferred walk on. The kid is listed as a TE/DE.

I could not find any star rankings on the kid.

I am confused we have one of the strongest classes in Louisiana history in 2019, why would we waste a scholarship next year on this kid?

    Did I miss something?

If he's a preferred walk on, he's not on scholarship.

I know he is not on scholarship this year. I thought preferred walk on's would be guaranteed a scholarship the next year.

Do they get the ones that come available in December when someone graduates?

I think you can have more than that ON scholly. So if say 8 sr's then that is 8 that open up but you can still only sign 25 to a freshman class. I may be wrong, wouldn't be the first time

My understanding of preferred walk-ons is they are guaranteed a spot on the team, but it has no bearing on scholarships.

Some members don't get to travel with the team, so it also may give him the leg up on other walk ons in terms of travel.

I'm sure you're more likely to earn a scholarship that route also, but it's not a guarantee like a grayshirt.

How many preferred walk-ons is a team allowed to have?

I do not believe there is a limited number of them.

This is one of many good articles on the subject.

Key differences? If you've been recruited as a walk-on you still must sit out if you transfer. You cannot receive a scholarship as a preferred walk-on until your junior year. If you receive a scholarship as a sophomore it is back counted to the last class' 25 scholarship player limit. So we'd have Loving until his junior year unless we shockingly don't cap out at 25. We will, though, I think we all agree.

Some schools it guarantees a roster spot for the duration of the season. Other schools it just means you don't have to try out. Those are usually smaller schools.

Preferred walk-ons receive all the support and comforts of a scholarship player except the actual scholarship itself.

I heard we’ll likely be short of the max scholarship players. If we have less than max (I believe 75), we can’t offer the remaining to walk-ons until their junior year? There must be a good reason for the NCAA to restrict this but allow $cam to receive no punishment. I don’t see it, I want to slap someone, can anyone explain the logic?
