I guess it was too hard to sentence death after his parents plead for his life to be spared and knowing that the guy has serious mental issues. I think he should have received death. If a dog kills or attacks they put that dog down. I don't see any difference here. Spare the taxpayers having to pay for this fucker.
Unlikely it would be carried out. Colorado has only executed 4 people in about 40 years. Put him in the general population where he will get the shot beaten out of him and be everybody's bitch.
Juries have a tough time sentencing the mentally ill to death. Hell, most juries have a tough time sentencing anyone to death.
The average stay on death row is 15 years and one has been there 36 years. One stayed there for 39 years and died of natural causes. 25% of death row inmates die of natural causes before execution. At Angola they are in un-airconditioned cells in solitary confinement. It is not pleasant and I don't understand why more of them don't do what McVeigh did--plead guilty and waive all appeals and get it over with.
Death penalty opponents often use this argument; no one ever challenges it. Maybe you can answer why a death sentence is more expensive than a 50-year incarceration, cuz it really makes no sense to me.
