Holy Crap!! Now it's JR's fault that we can't run the ball? I'm thinking there must be some kind of way for JR to take the blame for this whole Iraq thing.
I expect mistakes to be made by JR and the clock management by him at the end of the AU game was boneheaded. However I've said this several times in here, I'm worried about him being timid and trying to guide the ball to the WR's and throwing off his backfoot. He didn't do that this weekend against Tulane nor any other games, but in the Auburn game, he reminded me of 2004 JR. He was throwing off his back foot all night and trying to guide everyball to the WR's instead of just firing the ball like he usually does. Because of that WR's had to come back and wait for the ball. This killed a couple of big plays due to the WR's being open and at least one TD could've come out of a good pass but the WR had to wait. He needs to trust his arm and let it go in the big games. He threw the ball completely different in the Auburn game. Other than that he will be OK. He makes the passes and is accurate most of the time but him guiding the ball and throwing off the back foot needs to change.
Oh yeah, I was glad to see Scott get a lot of playing time. I think that is a sign that we will see him in the MSU and UF game. I hope AB can get back to 100% we could use him.
Quinn is an interesting player. I don't know what it is, whether it is the hype, if he is cocky, or if he just isn't as good as they say, I do'nt know what it is. I do know that I saw him in person against Penn State and certain passes he makes make you want to proclaim him the best QB of the past five years. Others make you wonder whether he is throwing it to the ground or the receiver. To me, it seems like he is not on the same page as his WR's...
Every great QB can and has to be able to throw off there back foot, this whole arguement about how a qb should not throw off his back foot is ridiculous. JR has made some great, great throws off his back foot to win games no less. It is called buying time for your WR and giving them every chance to get open, or buying that extra half second to avoid the rush. With an arm as strong as JRs, throwing off his back foot is not something I am worried about, he doesn't do it routinely, only when he needs to. And for a guy who is 15-3 career starter for the tigahs, he sure is getting a bum rap in this thread.
Another thing about JR that I've noticed....When we're on defense, he just stands om the sidelines and doesn't even attempt to make a tackle!
00Tiger, I know he improvises his throwing motion a lot and he does it very well because he has the arm to do it. I'm not knocking for throwing off the back foot all the time b/c it is needed at times. However, he was a different QB in the AU game. I've watched the game twice and noticed that he was trying to guide the ball to his WR's instead of firing it like he usually does. Now as far as throwing off the back foot, he was throwing off the back foot when he had time in the pocket and had the time to step into it. That is what bothers me. He needs to step into the throw when he has the time and stop guiding the ball to the WR's. Now he has done much better than 2004 and 2005 at his mechanics and touch. The Auburn game though he was a different QB in his mechanics and trying to guide the ball. In the big games he needs to play like he played againt Arizona and fire the ball and not be timid and not guide the ball. I'm not blaming him at all for losing the Auburn game at all, even though he had poor clock management and could've had maybe 2 TD's if he had put more on the ball. But QB's will make mistakes. I just noticed he was throwing the ball different and his mechanics were different in the Auburn game as compared to the others.
Another thing that makes alot of other quarterbacks look more polished is that they play in conferences that the best defense in the league is equal to Arizona or Tulane. Hell there are probably three guys playing receiver for us that could play QB in some of these leagues and look real good doing it. Face it guys, the SEC is as close to the NFL as it gets when talking about defense and defensive speed. Next saturday watch some PAC-10 or Big East or Big 10 games. The announcers will clue you in about how those leagues play football. I laugh every time I hear it. "The secondary is a speedy one. All four guys run sub 4.6 40's." Hell, our DE's are that fast in the SEC. All of their speed is on offense. That's how they play, that's just how it is. JR isn't perfect, but he does what he does against the best defenses in the country. None of these more "polished" QB's that have been spoken about can say that.
I'll say it again. LSU could have worse problems than a quarterback who is as good as Russell and who still has room to improve. And he has improved steadily his whole career. Jimbo brings them along. Rohan didn't blossom until his senior year, you know. Russell is going to be the top quarterback in the SEC and if he's guilty of not being 100% perfect, yet . . . I can live with that just fine.
