He would have to win a few national championships before he would go back to the NFL and be paid as much as he could at LSU... Saban is an ELITE college coach and will get ELITE nfl pay... Del Rio isnt considered that yet, but i think any coach that comes to the current incarnation of LSU football will have the pro question...

You just excluded the majority of coaches as possible candidates. The Paternos and Bowdens no longer exist in college football. Coaches will always consider better options.

Unless a coach is an alum, they aren't going to spend an entire career at one school .... and even that probably won't keep them at one school forever.

the things I remember most about Del Rio.
    1. During NFL strike way back when, he was in the back of his pickup with a shotgun to scare the scabs.

    2. He put a tree stump in the Jax locker room and encouraged players to hit it with an ax as a way of demostrating "chipping away at it" .
One of his players almost cut his leg off.

Not really. It was his idiot kicker. Is that still considered a player?

Just found this, per the Foxsports.com rumor board:

Word is Gary O'Hagan of IMG, who is Jack Del Rio's agent, sent Skip a gift basket just this past week and passed along holiday wishes...in additon to letting LSU know Jack was monitoring the situation.

If Del Rio made the jump, it would be to be here for "ten, twenty years" as Bertman said this evening. May be a shot in the dark, sure, but I'd love to have him!

Honestly ,doing well in the pros is almost meaningless to me. So much that distinguishes one coach from another in the NFL is pure luck. They're all guessing about their draft picks and some of them hit the jackpot. I'd take Spurrier over Del Rio, and Spurrier bombed in the NFL. Carroll bombed in the NFL. Erikson has never had a winning record in the NFL and is about to get chased out of San Francisco. All of these guys are/were winners in college. It won't suprise me if Saban bombs as well. You're trying to catch lightening in a bottle in the NFL.

We should focus on coaches who've had success in college. NFL experience is just a bonus. We KNOW Davis can recruit great athletes because he's done it. That's priority number one. Bring in the athletes.

Exactly right. The name "Steve Spurrier" comes to mind...

wouldn't jax be able to match anything LSu could throw at him?

I just dont see how a sucessful Pro Coach would go back to college. doesn't make sense.

some people, like many of us, like the college game better then the nfl. plain and simple. And Del Rio is a way better coach then davis and could easily recruit. All he has to say is i coached at the next level and i can get you there. I don't think Groh had ever recruited(not positive) before taking the UVA job and look at the classes he has hauled in.
