They vote on pretty much any sport you can think of, for a variety of categories.

Here's the info on the award to JM.

"When it comes to last minute heroics and the two-minute offense, there is no better field general than LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell. The 6'6", 250 pound sophomore from Mobile, Alabama engineered overtime wins against SEC foes Alabama and Auburn, and rallied the Bayou Bengals from a potential season-opening upset at Arizona State. As a result, the Touchdown Club of Columbus has recognized JaMarcus Russell as their selection for the 2005 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year. Russell passed for close to 2500 yards this past season and connected for 15 touchdowns. An injury in the SEC Championship game deprived him of his chance to play in the Peach Bowl, but he'll return to the Tigers' huddle next season and will be ready to lead LSU back to the top of the SEC standings."

Hey I just noticed RP got one in 2004.

    J. Russell deserved the number 1 QB in the SEC. The reason that he was voted as player of the year because LSU is the highest rank team from SEC at the end of the season.

If anyone have problem with that then check out AUBURN sent a record number of its players to NFL last year.

Beside from others LSU QBs, I dont think there is a better QB than J. Russell in SEC next year. That said a lot.

    I kinda agree.

Not to hate on JR, but...winning PLAYER (not just QB, but a non-position specific "player") of the year award?

that's awesome for him! maybe now he'll get some confidence about himself and make quicker decisions or be more assertive as a leader... Im not sure how it will affect him but confidence is good at the QB position.

I dont necc. agree with the selection. You could make a case for shockley, irons, croyle, or a number of linemen and linebackers.

Yeah, I think people think it's nice to hear, but you tend to be more proud when you feel somebody really deserves an award. If it was an "everything being considered" award, I could agree. I mean, he had all those people living at his place because of Katrina and he still had a good season while being a great competitior.

Still, barely anybody thought Georgia would be really good this year, much less go to the SECCG and win it. Shockley was pretty much the main reason for that because he had a season that went way beyond people's expectations. And his stats were almost all dominant compared to JR's.

Kenny Irons would have been up there as well. But yeah, JR probably won it because LSU finished ranked higher than the other SEC teams. Not right, but that happens a lot.

Maybe he won it because without his heroics, LSU is a 7 win team instead of 11.

I agree there were other deserving players, maybe more deserving, but you got to admit nobody in the league was more clutch than JR.

Not as long as the bigots think they can get a white QB again.

    Congrats JR!!
