I agree with everything except that he needs to be brought along slowly. He's one play away from being the starter on a championship caliber team. No need to throw him into the fire full time before he has to be, but he needs to be as prepared as possible ASAP. Besides he's not a true freshman coming straight out of HS. He's much more seasoned than the average first year player. Lee is and should be the starter for now, but you don't want to wait until the first half of the Bama game, have Lee go down and then say ok it's time to pick up the pace on bringing him along. It's waaaay too late then. I'd like to see him get a series or two in every game unless or until he proves he's not ready.JMO
In every game that we are winning mett should play. I think he should have gotten the last couple of possessions aginst uo. Anytime were up by over 14 pts in the second half, mett should get snaps.
Bringing him along slowly doesn't preclude significant playing time. It means not quickly putting a millstone around his neck with responsibility to start and carry the team when he expected to be the third-string quarterback. That is exactly what happened with Lee in 2008. He played well enough to break many of Hodson's freshman records, but he wasn't ready for Prime Time. Fair enough. I've always said that you don't sign junior college players to sit them on the bench. True. But neither do we want to play him early and lose a game to someone like State and go into Bama down a game. This is Les' challenge . . . to know just how fast to bring along a new quarterback. I would, too, under optimum circumstances. But with Jefferson getting the lions share of the 1st team snaps all summer, Lee needs the playing time, too.
Nothing surprising here. My guess is we'll try our best to redshirt Mett and have him for 2012 and 2013.
That's a negative. And I don't count handing the ball off 3 times on the very last drive as "getting in the game".
One half of a good game against a cupcake team does not elevate a man to starter. Especially when the starter had a better game.
Not if we play him past the point of redshirting him this season. Then he'll only be able to play 1 more year within the next 2. And he'll certainly play out his career in 2012 at that point.
My guess is JJ is done and we are down to JL and Mett for the entire year. I don't think Miles tries the redshirt route. I think Mett plays anytime there is a reasonable chance to get him time without hurting the chance of winning the game. It will definitely benefit the team next season.
