I'm glad at least ONE person is smart enough to live in reality.

Mett is a HUGE potential ... but pull the same crap on him that was pulled on Lee, and could end up suffering from the same issues as Lee. Lord knows, LSU fans are unforgiving! Just look at this board. Some here are still stuck in 2008, not realizing that kid hasn't thrown an int in a long time. Doesn't mean he can't be a gun slinger .. he's just matured to know better.

Les said Monday that LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee is expected to play from “start to finish” against Mississippi State.

One thing I've noticed about first time starting qb's in the SEC is that I've yet to see one not got through some "growing pains". No matter how talented they were. Experience at the QB in this conference means a lot. And can mean the difference from playing in New Orleans for the BCS NCG or in the Capital One Bowl.

Personally, I don't see Mettenberger being so good that he would not experience any sort of growing pains. Growing pains that could potentially cost you a game or two. Though Lee isn't going to win the Heisman I think he's seasoned and experienced enough that he gives y'all the best chance of going all the way. I don't think your staff is going to turn him loose and ask him to carry the team. They will use him as a game manager, put him in high % passing situations and allow the strength of y'alls team to tote the load.

Unlike us, ya'll are in a position to have an older qb with a lot of game time experience. That means a lot.

Very valid points. Agree with you overall. Mett=great potential, but inexperienced, although not fully. We all know the UGA situation, and he played JUCO. He's not coming directly out of high school. Cam started out of JUCO last year, and I think I remember him doing okay, and still is. I know Cam was a special talent, but he was unknown at this point of the season last year.

To be clear, what most of us are saying is that after seeing Mett play for the first time in live competition, he looked better than JLee has at any point against any level of competition ever. That includes Troy St. and LA Tech. Now, that comment does not translate to start Mett now over JL. Agree with the experience angle, and that JL is playing just fine. It's just that Mett whets your apetite with his smoothness (so far), and the offense would appear to have more balance with him at the helm. Mark my words, the line will continue to be stacked while JL is QBing, unless we gradually open up the offense more and he proves successful. Mett, albeit briefly against low-level competition, just looked like that would be more predictably successful to open up the offense and provide more balance vs JL. That's it. That is all some of us are saying. I think MC would agree with this, although I do not want to speak for him.

To be clear, you are speaking for yourself. Mettenberger shows tremendous promise. But Lee has had moments at LSU that Mettenberger is still dreaming of.

Lee has thrown multiple 250+ yard games, Mettenberger none.

Lee has won SEC games on the road, Mettenberger has not even played one.

Lee longest pass is 66 yards, Mettenberger's is 19.

Lee has led four comeback victories, Mettenberger . . .

I fully agree with you but you seem to have changed your tune since pre-season. Is it because JJ is gone?

I disagreed with the people that said that Les would not play Mettenberger. I knew that he would. If Jefferson was here, Mettenberger still would have gotten in versus Northwestern.

Today I disagree with those that say Mettenberger should start based on one game, when Lee is playing very well. I realize the value of experience. If Jefferson were here, we would have two experienced quarterbacks. And I wish he was.

Mettenberger looks like the real deal, but he is not Superman. Not yet. He will be sacked, throw interceptions, and lose a game at some point. They all do.

I should have said "some" instead of "most". I agree with your comments. I am not trying to annoint him the starter right now, just simply was pleasantly surprised with how smooth his throwing motion was, and how confident he appeared. That's all. I have not seen that in P&G in quite a while. The only comparison I have personally made to JL is that Mett already looks better, subjectively, than JL ever has, imho. I have not made any statistical comparisons, b/c there really aren't any. I am referring to mechanics and apparent command.

Look, the taste was brief and maybe misleading. We'll see. I predict that all of those stats you just threw out will be smashed by Mett, and probably within just a few games really, once his time does come. I just hope that, in the interim, when defenses stack the line that either we are able to continue to smash their mouths running, and/or JL is able to step it up when needed. I think he will, but I still think Mett will probably be starting by mid-year, and our offense will demonstrate more balance and capability when he does.

He's a good-looking kid. I was most impressed at how he stood tall in the pocket with a blitzing linebacker in his face and threw the pass perfectly. No cringing, no happy feet, no throwing off the back foot, no scrambling . . . no reaction at all, much less panic. I haven't seen that since Hodson.

But he still needs to be brought along slowly and Lee needs to take advantage of his experience with SEC defenses. Mettenberger has never seen a deceptive, shifting, scary fast Nick Saban defense yet.
