Depends on how its done. Back in the 80's, Archer had a good routine going with Hodson and Guidry. Hodson was clearly the starter, but Guidry would come in for a series, usually early in the 2nd quarter, and again in the 3rd. Hodson got to watch and receive some instruction while the offense was on the field, and Guidry got valuable playing time. But no one ever questioned that it was Hodson's team.
I've always thought we'd see Mett as either the full-time starter or at least quality back-up time until we got into the meat of SEC play. I just don't think Lee has progressed enough to be "the guy" for a full 60 minutes against Alabama or Arkansas, games we must win to hoist the crystal ball. I like the guy, and I respect the hell out of Lee for staying through all the crap his redshirt freshman year, but he's really just a glorified backup in my eyes. As good as the defense is, there will be a game when we need 250+ passing yards and 3 TDs to match our opponent. Mett has the talent to do that consistenly, Lee doesn't. The only reason Mett isn't starting now is lack of experience within the system and playbook knowledge.
How do you figure that? Lee has thrown for multiple 250+yard games at this level. Metenberger has thrown none. Don't let your imagination run away just yet.
Yes. Read on a Penn State forum (after 'Bama whupped them): "When you have two quarterbacks, you really have NO quarterback!"
Exactly. I'm super excited to see what Mett can do, when he's needed. He's gonna be our starter for the next 2 years. But the last thing I want is for him to go in against SEC defenses without enough time learning to read their schemes unless it's absolutely necessary.
Lee hasn't thrown an interception yet. He has been very careful with the ball. The team that wins the turnover battle usually wins the game. Miles had a gunslinger qb with lee. He had to put him in the line of fire too soon and lee became an interception machine. Because of that lee is who he is today. Maybe lee has matured and won't throw the interceptions anymore but he has also lost some of his gunslinger's fearless edge. Miles has another gunslinger in Mett. I don't think he wants to make the same mistake with Mett. A fearless gunslinger qb that doesn't understand how to read complex defenses becomes prone to interceptions. Miles doesn't want the future star qb to be boo'ed out of the stadium because a pic 6 cost us a big game.
Making them prep for two QB's: Sneaky, CLM, sneaky! Genius! CLM sows confusion into the ranks of the opposition even during prep & practice the week before. Divide (their attention & focus) and conquer.
