Agree that this kind of sentiment... "oh my gosh another player has left... therefore Brady must be a bad coach" is kind of this again and again sentiment that just has me somewhat confused... especially when LSU has moved their RPI up every year since 2001. I mean, does "darwinism" have any merit in the world ... or "meritocracy"? Said a different way, maybe it's a good thing that our 3rd string power forward (maybe 4th?) goes off and plays at a school where he can get some PT, making space for Brady and Butch to sign a player we need, like an impact PG or SG next season. I mean it's fundamentally a problem if your kids are leaving, when you have NO players (see below other SEC coaches), but it's another thing when they leave b/c you're 2 deep at every position. Now, we CAN debate whether Brady should have ever signed Kentrell in the first place, just b/c heck, someone should have seen this coming, but KG was a local kid who played JC ball, and maybe he wanted to come home, be a Tiger, play ball with Darnell, etc. Who really thought the kid was trying to be a NBA first round pick! I don't want it to seem like I'm defending Brady, b/c he has had some players leave, but by and large they've left and the program has not been hurt (about the only real "loss" was Stro leaving a year early and Kedrick Brown not suiting up--but they were both lottery picks). If you fired every coach that had some player defections in today's day, well, let's fire... Tubby (lost 3 players to the draft, with 2 of them being undrafted. Almost lost Joe Crawford last year to a transfer, and Tubby refused to release him) Lebo (Auburn almost lost their entire starting line up before this season, including Killingsworth to Indiana) Stansbury (lost Ervin their PG to Arkansas, had players not show up who were recruited, playing with 7 new players) Donovan (lost 3 players to the draft, with 2 of them being undrafted. sound familiar?) the list goes on and on.... I suppose we should can half of the SEC coaches (and most of the good ones). It's just part of the game today folks.
hope I get a nice prize with that award... My point is that the top 30 basketball teams of which we are one of those has to deal with "free agents" on a yearly basis. If you get a kid that is highly regarded in high school, they have already probably tested the waters to get drafted in the NBA and not go to college. In my opinion, that is the only thing on their mind once they get to college. What do I have to do to improve MY skills so that I can get drafted the next year? So college coaches have to deal with this ego, lack of "for the team" mentality as well as their "agents" running their lives. Let me put it out there also to think about in our football world mindset that we live in.. do you think that Justin Vincent would still be in a Tiger uniform if the same type of system existed in football? No, he would have already been in the NFL after his great freshman season. Think about how difficult football recruiting would be with knowing that this type of opportunities exist that can take away your best talent after just one year of them playing for you. The fact is that every NBA team only has 15 players and almost 3 per team is now international players that never play 1 day of college basketball. There were I think 10 kids that went straight to the NBA this year out of High School of which many had committed to high profile schools like Duke. Agents and AAU coaches are benefiting by getting players dreams up too high getting them to make decisions that might not be in their best long term interest. There are just as many failures as their are success stories on kids that leave college early. I stick to my point that the NBA continues to destroy the fun of college basketball.
Every coach losses players. Our fans just notice it much more on our team than they do for other teams. TSDude, rooting against your team because you dislike the coach? Pathetic.
I agree with this. It is so hard to follow college bball these days. Very few players stay for the full time and then others are JUCO transfers that also only play for a year or two. Seems like if you can't put together a team of all star freshman and sophmores then you have little chance of winning it all. IMO, most of these college basketball teams lack senior leadership seen on football and baseball teams.
:hihi: It's not that I disagree...I just find it humorous that somehow NBA talk came up in a thread about freaking Gransberry!:rofl: And I think there are A LOT more failures than success stories in trying to make the jump to the NBA. But that's life. We all make choices. I don't know what the solution is to save college basketball, if it really even needs to be saved. March Madness this past year was awesome (though admittedly it could have been better w/ some of those NBA players in the mix.) Regardless, it's the NCAA's product, and perhaps they should take a more proactive role in trying to get kids to go to school and stay there.
i don't think brady is a great coach but you can't get mad at him for this. KG transferred because he didn't think he would be able to play at this level. he said so himself. he wanted to go where he could start. If you try to blame this on brady then you are a complete idiot, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
O.K. you got me, I mispeled tou werds. To my defense that was after 3 hours of x-box 360 and three shots of jack! If you have read any of my other post my beef is not with Brady and his coaching style but how he gets his players to come to LSU. The way Brady coaches is great, put the five best players on the court. Problem is after 10 min of college basketball the five that started my not be the best players. That's when our role players come into play. We have to have good role players. Maybe Kentrell would have sucked but Ross hurts and Tim Bush at Baylor is putting up 14 & 7(or close to it). Two good role players. Like I said before it's not coaching style but I want to know, do some of the players know when they are recruited they are at best good role players? So no i'm not excited but a little upset (and just a little) when another guy who could have been a good role player trasfers (just can't get that spelling going). So far i'm excited about the way LSU has blasted the first two teams they have played. P.S. I went to college, to drop off my cousin, so any more post about spelling or grammer jaust keep thet n mine!
You assume he would have been a good role player. With his attitude, he wanted to start. Goodness, read the articles about the situation before making such comments.
It would be just aas productive and more positive to wish for a national championship with the hopes that John would go to a better basketball program or the NBA. You must live under a rock if you think that the majority of the teams don't lose players. Kentucky the premier program in the SEC, lost their starting Center, who was only a Sophomore, the year after they won their last national championship. There is center on the Louisville team that played his freshman year at Kentucky. He was one of their most highly rated recruits and was a big contributer to the big blue team as a true freshman. It's part of the game in today's college sports.
i cant believe we're still posting on this, but... KG leaving is no big deal to this team, but it will have a bigger effect if that scholly is gone next year, too. In hindsight, obviously, CJB shouldnt have signed him, but is it reasonable to think he should have seen it coming? Maybe, maybe not. The problem is that many players have left this program under CJB (albeit for a variety of reasons), and clearly, if he had not signed any of the guys that left LSU's team under his watch would have been much better. But this can be said of all coaches. It could be worse (look at Calipari). Are you certain LSU could hire a better replacement? I'm happy with CJB.
