All of those folks out there who are expecting a big windfall if Obama gets elected will be in for a huge letdown. The next time that the minimum wage level is adjusted again, and it has already been scheduled by this congress, this country will lose over a million additional jobs. I'm glad that I am immune from the +10% unemployment rate that we will experience under Obama. Hope and change won't pay the bills... I see a lot of suffering on the Obama horizon.
Agreed...but they already have a built-in excuse. They'll blame eight years of Bush for digging such a big hole they can can't reasonably be expected to dig us out of in only 4, 8, 12 years. Anything this Congress has done (which isn't much) for the past two years has been bamed on Bush. We'll see four more years of this (or more) if Obama wins. I want them held accountable to the same degree. No more double standards. If Obama wins and the Democrats have complete control, I want everything solved immediately. Anything less should be considered a failure and they should be labeled as liars for breaking their campaign promises. I also want Obama to be constantly critized by ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, and MSNBC for doing everything wrong just as they do when a Republican is in office. GOOD LUCK!...and it's that side of the aisle calling for a "Fairness Doctrine". What a freaking joke! Control the FCC, take your guns, tax you to death, late term abortions at request, etc, etc, etc. The founding fathers must be rolling in their graves. :911:...it wasn't just an "unfortunate" event!
Evidence? Look, the cost of living is going up and executives, blue-collar workers, and white collar salarymen have all gotten COL raises. The minimum wage is no different. From time to time it must go up. The alternative that you advocate is that we are going to have many millions of illegal aliens holding these jobs because Americans can't afford to work at them. They won't have imunizations, they live in shacks, they won't pay taxes, they won't buy insurance, and they'll send half their pay to Mexico. How many Mexicans do you employ already? This is what is responsible for loss of American jobs.
People hire the illegals because they will do the same work for less than what minimum wage is now, and can get away with it. So how is raising it going to solve this problem?
Raising it allows Americans to do the job legally. We have to prevent illegal employers from breaking our law by jailing them if they continue to hire foreign nationals illegally.
American's can do the job now in theory. Raising the minimum wage does not solve the problems of illegals working here. As long as employers can get away with hiring people for less to do the work they will. The minimum wage has nothing to do with the enforcement of law and nothing we do to it will rid the nation of illegals working for less money than what US citizens will work for. As for minimum wage, I understand the concept, and like everything in a free markert (taxes) there is an equilibrium were it no longer producing what it is intended to. There is a point were it is too high and actually causes the unelployment rate to go up. Don't get me wrong, I am for having a minimum wage and I think everyone needs to make a decent living. But there is a point were it is no longer just the people who are too lazy to work in the realm of unemployment, there comes a point where being forced to pay a certain wage causes companies to cut back on employment and there are no longer jobs available for that wage. In effect, it is a regulation placed on the jobs market of the United States.
I recently showed that a minimum wage job can't even get an American out of the poverty level or allow them reitrement savings, insurance, to pay taxes. Americans can't afford to work at the minimum wage. It helps it by not allowing employers to pay Americans at Mexican rates just to earn more money. Americans will work these jobs if the pay is just a little higher. But the employees have no incentive to pay Americans fairly if they can get illegal aliens without having to go to jail for it. Obviously. Why can you not see that the low minimum wage is making jobs available to attract these illegals. They come for two reasons: 1--we don't enforce the law, and 2--There are jobs here. What do you imagine that point is? $6.45 an hour? I have heard this a lot over the years. "increase in minimum wages will cause business to fire employees" but it never actually seems to happen when the minimum does go up. Nobody is talking about jumping them to $20/hour. Just allowing the minimum to keep up with inflation, like everybody else's salary. I'm a big believer in equilibrium and I think it can be demonstrated that the balance point must shift upward over time.
