This move baffles me a bit. I've always been a stickler for winning today because there may not be a tomorrow. To me you have to use Dirks in Game 6. Hopefully he can take it the Tigers to the 7th or 8th and then turn it over to Determan or someone else. Then IF there is a game 7 then you can come back with Determan and Johnny Wholestaff. Meier, Smith...every available arm. BUT that's a problem you don't mind having because it means your playing tomorrow.
We didn't pitch Dirks when we needed him last year in the CWS and once again, we're not gonna go with our most talented arm. This makes no sense. I like Jason, I think he's our most dependable, but by starting him, you leave no relief. By starting Dirks, you could still bring Jason in to close. You can't bring Dirks in to close. I would hate to lose knowing that we never threw our best arm. Setting up a pitching strategy when you're the one in the losers bracket is downright stupid. Go with the best you've got each game. But like another poster said, that's why they pay Smoke the big bucks.
Determann is a great pitcher too. And if we can win today then its our no. 2 pitcher matched up against their no. 4. Not a bad place to be for us.
Smoke just announced in pre game interview with Hanagrif that Determan will start Game 6 with..... Dirks in relief... WTF is this guy thinking.
