Saban couldn't be our BEAR because he had not yet come close to reaching the heights that Bryant did while at Bama and of course for not being there near as long either. Hell, Saban would have been vilified if he would have had a bad season this year, his fall from grace had already started in the minds of many last year. I'll add that he is not even our Spurrier.
Oh yeah. Nick's our Spurrier all right. Each came into a mediocre program, made it a multiple SEC winner and took home a national championship before moving on to unbelieveably high wages in the NFL.
I wasn't talking about comparing records or tenure at the university when comparing Bear Bryant/Spurrier to Saban. I was wondering if you think that 20 years from now, we'll be saying, "He's a good coach, but he's no Saban" as Bama/UF would say about Bear/Spurrier.
Unless a coach wins the National Champiosnhip, even if he goes unbeaten and doesn't win it like AU, than he won't measure up to Saban in the minds of many. And Sabans record will get better in a lot of folks mind, just like it has already. And we should hold any coach up to Nick's standards I believe, just do not judge him on one game or even as some have done on one decision. Just all coaches by their entire body of work after they have coached a season or two. There is not a coach in history that hasn't made a stupid decision that has cost his team a game. Right now the bar should be set a winning a National Champinship once every 5 years or at least playing for one when comparing a coach to Saban, but do we let a guy go if he doesn't win one in that time frame? Or maybe winning 2 SEC titles in a five year period should be where the bar is set, I guess it depends on who is doing the setting. What if we win 4 SEC championships in a 5 year span but do not play for a National title? How would fans feel about that? I have a feeling that many would be pissed, I'd be happy as a lark. Excuse my ramblings.
I'd take it right now and be happy. We'd be perennial top 10. What I'd like is to take the field each week and believe we have a good chance to win, even if its in an upset. I'd like to believe we could take the field against anyone and give a good account of ourselves. That means the likes of USC, Texas, Michigan, Miami, plus the SEC perennials. I'd take that.
There is no way Saban could be our Bear, first Bear Bryant went to Alabama and played for the Bama football team and graduating in 1935. Saban was never a LSU graduate and were as Bear loved Bama, Saban first love wasn't LSU.
