this is the obvious, and correct response, but it raises the question of why go one-dimensional against the poor teams. the outcome shouldnt be in doubt and youre probably not as good against the great teams because of it.
It's hard to say whether its Jimbo or not because he has had some very good games called before, especially in the 2003 season. He is known as one of the top offensive minds in CFB. I don't know whats up this year, last year we at least through deep to Bennie many times and he caught many long bombs. I guess Jimbo is a little conservative because i distinctly remember him always running the HB Draw in shotgun formation on 3rd and long. I know he has some tricks in his sleeve, College footballnews.com devoted a whole article to a play-call he had in the Arkansas game in 2003. But when you play conservative in big games like Auburn, you won't win too many of them. Even if you don't want to make a mistake, by playing conservative you are showing that you are clearly afraid of the opposing D. I would like to see more long bombs attempted on 1st down, or at least in 1on1, let JR unleash one and give our Recievers a chance to make a play.
Agreed. Mid-major programs are more likely to WANT to put up high scores. They don't make the big bucks, don't have the history or tradition of major college programs, and putting up 40-60 points a couple times a season is their best way to try to attract recruits that could play at major schools that could offer them exposure for the NFL in a few years or they can go to mid-major schools and play right away.
Spurrier liked hanging the occassional 60 on teams, and people loved him for it (at least I did.) Same for Stoops at OU. Y'all have made some great points. Overall, Jimbo presents a consistent run/pass balance. Coupled with a stout defense, that's a great approach. However, when one aspect isn't working (e.g. running this year), he doesn't innovate and use the passing game to set up the run game. It's tough to quantify because it's such a "what if" game. However, try predicting the sort of plays that are coming the next time LSU plays. If you start accurately predicting their plays with regular consistency (like I did v. AU and Florida), then there's room for improvement. Even more so when the execution is lacking.
Yes the old 'jimbo is being over ridden' claim...except when the team looks good, and then 'miles got out of the way'.
Jimbo is widely considered to be one of the best offensive coordinators in the nation. I am amazed no one has been able to lure him away from us with a head coaching job. But that could change soon. How ANYONE could possibly complain about a 35 point victory in beyond me. The only problem with the offense has been the offensive line; not the play calling.
