Pathetic? May I point out that LSU, after playing five ranked teams, including four that have been ranked in the top-10, is still nationally: The #2 Total defense, #1 in the SEC The #4 passing defense, #2 in the SEC The #6 rushing defense,#1 in the SEC The #6 scoring defense, #1 in the SEC The #3 pass efficiency defense, #2 in the SEC
It's kinda hard to argue with Corso's prognostication as of late. I hope the guys just need a week off because they have looked like garbage the past 3 games. The aggressiveness isn't there, recievers are frequently left wide open, and the QB has rarely gotten pressured.
Good post Red. Because they are not a dominant defense does not mean they are pathetic! There are options between dominant and pathetic, like very good, high quality defense. I think that's where we are, very good, high quality.
He certainly has motive to inspire LSU. He picked us to win the NC, so maybe he is trying to fire the team up.
Can you really blame him for saying that? From an outsider's point of view, he's right based on what our D did in the first few games compared to now. If USC were in our shoes we'd be calling their D a fraud. It works both ways.
Frankly, the past three weeks, I'm scared when the defense takes the field with the game on the line. I'd rather have our offense out there to win it. It worked two times and didn't against UK. But the defense isn't playing with the fire right now. We had some in the 4th quarter against Florida, and we had it in the 2nd half in all but that last drive vs. AU last night. I'm hoping that we are improved following our week off. I'm also thinking the loss of Alexander was enormous.
Why worry about what Corso says... I'd worry more about when he picks us to win... he's wrong alot. Besides up until the Stanford game he was riding Carroll/USCs johnson all the way to NO. Our D may give up a lot of Red Zone scores... but often do we allow an oppenent in the red zone? Besides 5 of 8 games against top 17 nationally ranked teams... their bound to score if their truely deserving of their rank.
I believe the problem has been the scheme and lack of execution in it the past four games. I don't know if it is fatigue, or just a philosophical approach. But when teams spread out in the 3 years Pelini has been here we hardly blitz. I thought we would see a lot last night, but may be due to injury, depth, and fatigue we did not. Teams now know they can get the short routes off, and hardly go deep. After the bye, against Bama, if we stay with this approach, it may cost us. This just my 2 cents. I think we will get back to our old selves after the bye, and everyone has had rest. We'll see. But I can't argue too much because if our offense doesn't misfire in the last 3 games with drops and turnovers and penalties we win comfortably with the gameplan put in place. Anyone else agree? :geauxtige
Objectives: Offense: Score at least one more than the opposition. Check Defense: Give up at least one less than our offense scores. Check Problem?
