That is an anarchic statement. We are not a bunch of individuals whose only responsibility is to ourselves but a society. To have a successful society there need a certain amount of group responsibility. Some of it is established by laws but most is by a social compact. No freedom is absolute and to have a successful society everyone has to accommodate others. There is a balance required that results in the greatest common good. This is ever shifting. You are continually banging for your absolute right to do what you think and damn those who disagree. That’s a recipe for total breakdown of our country. In this case you’re being asked to take a small and simple step and help your neighbors. It requires little sacrifice....except maybe your pride to do so. Yes people at risk need to be self protective too. However circumstances will require they go out in public or economic issues may force them to work. Even if the added margin of protection is limited it’s compounded many times when everyone does it. As Jesus said “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”. It takes a certain amount of courage to do something for others when you may be ridiculed for it. However doing right by others make you a better person and it a better world.
I have students who are simply not safe in their homes. We have some previously responsible, hard-working students who we cannot FIND. School was one of the only safe places of escape for some of my students. We canNOT live like this indefinitely. And for the record, I really hate wearing masks. They are hot and uncomfortable, and knowing that I will never be able to fly without wearing one for the rest of my life is unsettling. And don't say it's temporary....I am worried it isn't.
also, to add to what shane says, the faster we get out there and interact the faster we get to herd immunity and can let our precious grannies back out again.
