22 people in Solana Beach received $1000.00 fines each for....watching the sun set on Friday.

If you don't wear a mask and you come within a few feet of me you are threatening my life. Why shouldn't I have the right to shoot you?

Whatever...Walking down an alley in new orleans or detroit is more dangerous than that and you can't shoot a person just because they are there. But in your mind not wearing stupid mask is a death sentence. Of course you wanted to lock up people going to church also so why kill them?

That’s just ridiculous. Just goes to show how stupid our body politic is. Handing out fines for sitting in your car or on your car watching the sun set is just plain ig-no-ra-mus. Next thing ya know will be throwing the infected into leper pits.

I agree, that fine seems steep and unjustified, but they probably had lesser fines leading up to that and the powers that be are tired of peoples shit. Think about it from a use of services point of view. The more people out and about the more chance there are accidents, crimes, lots of things. The city needs to keep police and first responders free for the pandemic stuff, not for you to go out to the beach and see the sunset. These fines are deterrents, and I would bet they padded the numbers a bit to scare people. And I would bet good money that judges throw out these fines whole sale once its all said and done.

Again I totally get why anyone would be upset, but a stay in place order doesn't mean you can just go out and wonder the streets. They are doing these orders for a reason.

The deaths are not justifying the reactions IMO.

A stay in place order only has one purpose, to limit human contact. I’ll have to go with what the Governor for Wyoming said .. “we’ve been social distancing for 130 years”. Not surprising, Wyoming and Alaska are dead last on the list of cases.

Responsible distancing should not be punished. It’s one thing to come upon a couple enjoying the sunset, quite another to come across a frat party. ..... AND to repeat, wear a fricken mask, and get on with life.

Don't look at the current deaths and go, whelp this is overblown. You will not truly get a good feel for this until down the road sometime. Its not looking great.

It's the potential deaths that are driving these actions. It's very easy to understand, if we do not do this then most will catch the virus. And lets be generous and say the death rate is only .5%, when we are seeing numbers closer to 2%, this is why testing is so important.

So at .5% death rate: 1.6 million dead in america
At 1% death rate: 3.27 million dead in america
At 2% 6.5 million dead in america

But we really don't know this number until its all said and done, based on the current numbers its between 2 and 3 percent dying. Not a great outlook.

The object is to keep everyone from getting it, keep the numbers low and hopefully make it to a vaccine, hopefully keep from having a second season of it which will make the above numbers seem small.

By next year if we are saying we only had 200k die, then we did a great job. We will not know how good we do until its over, period. If we loosen up too soon, we will see the above numbers or more just at a later date.

Dr. Fauci: "Unless we get this globally under control, there is a very good chance that it will assume a seasonal nature in the sense that if - and I hope it's not only if but when - we get it down to a point where it is really at a low level, we need to be prepared. Since it will be unlikely to be completely eradicated from the planet, as we get into next season, we may see the beginning of a resurgence. And that's why we're pushing so hard to get our preparedness much better than it was but, importantly, pushing on a vaccine and doing clinical trials for therapeutic interventions so that hopefully, if in fact we do see that resurgence, we will have interventions that we did not have in the beginning of the situation that we're in right now" [source]

It’s not the deaths. It’s the loading of hospitals, ICUs, and ventilators. Look at current hot spots and the heroic action the health care workers have been asked to do. Look at how the hot spots have migrated with time. Maybe Alaska, Wyoming and very few other states can ignore with limited risk but even the rural south is seeing expansion of the infected. If you really believe that life as normal is possible without a vaccine and/or truly proven treatment then I’ve got a bridge in Brooklyn and land in coastal LA to sell.
