The guy who said Buchanan may be right, but Louisiana's own Zachary Taylor may be a real dark horse for this slot. Taylor had guts, but was adament that California and New Mexico would enter the Union as free states, and he was intending to personally lead armies into South Carolina to hang all rebels there in 1850.

This would have allowed the Senate to have a majority of free state votes for the first time and the South would probably have seceded in 1850 over it. Which means, for better or worse, the Civil War, or maybe the FIRST War of the Southern Rebellion, would have broken out in 1850.

Taylor died just in time to avoid the war. Millard Fillmore, who is often the punchline of jokes, took office and defused the situation. He was more capable than his reputation would have one believe.

Somebody must have taken over CottonBowel's computer. A post that looks like he made but there are no insults or name calling.

If it were not for Vietnam, LBJ would unquestionably be the greatest President of the latter half of the 20th Century. Medicare, Medicaid, the Civil Rights Acts, the Voting Rights Act, and other things were great leaps forward for the country.

Ronald Reagan ran up huge budget deficits, got over 250 Marines murdered in Lebanon over his incompetence, made deals with Iran and Iraq, secretly dealt with terrorists, committed impeachable offenses in Central America, and left his country in a huge fiscal mess. He was the most irresponsible man to hold the office until the second Bush.

Gee, then you should REALLY love GWB. He is making LBJ look like a miser.

A Republican President I simply cannot work up much hate for is Richard Nixon. Mentally, he was completely unsuited to hold the office, but he signed important environmental protection and also signed some other worthwhile things.

It is a shame that his tapes reveal what a mean-spirited person he ended up being.

On the other hand, until Bill Clinton, and perhaps Jimmy Carter, he probably had given more thought to the world than any other President in recent memory. Opening up China may have been a lucky meeting of two leaders having the same idea at the same time, but the right wing would have been up in arms if a Democratic President had done it.
